just my 2 cents, but i have 2 concerns with this strategy. 1. even if you sand the hell out of it and seal the wood you are going to have rougher edges than cardboard boxes and will have it snag the cards if you're sorting through. 2. when you look at the weight it will grow exponentially with the size of the box. most 5000 card boxes are 10# or more. a wood box would probably add 3-5 # per box. Where the flimsiness of the cardboard will almost lock a stack of boxes in place, a stack of wooden boxes if not perfectly square could tip over easily causing more damage to the contents.
i think for a display case wood would be cool like the one linked perhaps for holding toploaders or slabbed cards but wouldn't use it for raw set storage.
i had once considered some plastic 1000 card boxes i found at wal*mart for a while until i accidentally closed one too fast and chewed the hell out of about 50 corners...and then the time my basement flooded and those boxes were stored on the floor and held water destroying all the cards. i tossed most of the plastic cases after that. Luckily my main collection was on shelves that were just above the water line.
