Being close to where his family lives (or at least lived), it was interesting to hear the local morning talk shows try to spin it some to not really defend him, but talk about how nice the family is. I never saw the hype in Jontay or Michael, but I'm also not laughing at the family issues (another brother has legal issues for DWI and I think manslaughter as a result of the DWI). I don't get why he would risk so much to win so little. Even if he would never be a full time NBA player, Jontay could have still made some money as a 2 way player or even playing overseas. The ones I feel bad for most are his younger siblings who all play basketball and have potential to be big stars. Now there will always be a cloud over them wondering if they have a bad game if it was by design or not.
A lifetime ban is well deserved not only because he bet on his own team (TO LOSE), but also to set the benchmark that it won't be tolerated. The only thing laughable in this is how much the professional leagues and sports channels are in bed with the gambling/oddsmakers yet don't see the hypocrisy in it. The only silver lining for Jontay is that his family is somewhat well off, so he won't be hurting financially and he also was already dipping into crypto and betting, so he'll probably get some kind of deals with someone.
