What is the distinction?  And for the future, where do I look to find variation information at?

Best bet, go to the set and look at all the different forum thread that discuss this very thing. Generally, very generally, there is either a front border difference and/or text typesetting differences on the back.

Sometimes the pattern is different on the front, but sometimes it is the same. It is the text on the back that appears to be different. Just open up an entry for retail set and factory set of the same card and compare the "shape" of the text below the stats. Or just look at the last line of the last paragraph. I use that to see the difference.

i understand the last line and the difference on the front, but there are a few that I don't get- 71- bert Blyleven, the front is the same, and the last line is the same.  27- the checklist- I didn't see any difference.  and 19- Gary Gaetti- they look the same. This is definately a frustrating set, but i enjoy trying to find different cards- 

Need to loo closely in the typesetting on the back, whether it's the bio information of the write-up below it. In the case of Blyleven the bio info is different. On one card the word Traded is at the end of the line whereas on another version Traded starts the second line.
