Instead of tearing, burning, or throwing away, I would be more creative in taking cards out of commission. I do some woodworking, so an option I'm considering is to build something like a birdhouse, glue some cards to it, then cover it with lacquer. I think the 87 set would look especially cool, with the wood look to it.
(I see something similar has already been mentioned....)

I saw a good example of card recycling once at a New York City bar across the street from Madison Square Park next to the flat iron building called Live Bait. They had '60s cards up on the walls, beneath some glass on top of the bar, etc. I wouldn't have done that with cards that old, but maybe with some from the mass produced years.

Wow. I live just a few blocks from there. I will have to stop by and check it out.
(I've never purposefully destroyed a card, though I have rendered a few worthless by playing games with them.)

I use damaged and wax-stained cards to protect other cards when shipping.

What would you say if I told you I was actually paid to rip up cards?

Yes, let's destroy all the useless over printed cards. After we are done with that let's destroy some coinage, that should boost values somewhat. Hey, then maybe puppies and kittens....
OK...that's sarcasm folks. Others may destroy if you wish, I prefer not to destroy them. Why would I turn around and destroy something I enjoy collecting?
Sorry...this wasn't meant to offend anyone, I am just in a freakin' mood tonight...is the moon full?

Wonder how many cards (1987-1993) have been lost to natural disaster. I remember hearing that the Baseball Card Kid (guy who advertised in hobby mags for a while in the 90's) lost the bulk of his inventory to a fire. I'm sure a lot of cards from that era were lost.

Ok, I'll chip in. I have thrown away about four baseball cards in my entire life. They were doubles that were in very poor shape, not sellable, and unlikely to be of interest to anyone else. Still, it pained me to do it.
For years, I tried to tell my thousands of 1980s doubles with no luck at all. So finally I asked my card shop what to do with them. They said they would take them and they would be sent to people in the military for some reason through some means, who apparently got a kick out of them. Thus, about 6000 "junk wax" cards went to my shop for nothing. They gave me a small discount on that day's purchase, and I have no idea where the cards went. But I highly doubt that they were destroyed or sold. Thus the prices remain low. So sorry.

The only cards I've ever destroyed/trashed were basically already destroyed anyway. All were cards from the "Junk Wax" years and were creased, stained or written on. Other than that, I don't trash any cards. Someone somewhere wants them. I just have to find those people. I'm still surprised by the huge interest in trading for my 1990 Pro Set football cards the past few years. I've made dozens of trades with folks who only wanted those cards from my collection. I'm glad I kept them all these years b/c those trades have really helped my PC.
