Because Topps has the EXCLUSIVE MLB rights for baseball.

So this mean Topps has rights until what 2020, then who's next in line ? or will Topps always have those rights and keep Panini out in the cold.

Money makes the world go around. I would hate to see Topps get locked out someday. I'm not a fan of unlicensed products so it would most likely mean the end of collecting Topps cards for me at that point.

I can't stand one company having exclusive rights. It's unfair and smacks of anti-trust, monopoly, etc. And with that exclusivity they flood the market with thousands of licensed products, inserts, parallels.
Of course, you have nobody to blame but yourselves. You keep buying their products.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I hear ya and Topps owns several card set to set the market in their favor however, do you believe these Panini Diamond Kings value will hold over time even without licensing ? or would Topps just push them out of the market and we'll be left with only Topps cards.

Topps IS baseball, and I wouldn't touch anything else. I didn't know anybody else tried to make baseball cards, but I wouldn't touch anything else anyways. Most non-Topps baseball cards that come into my possession immediately get ripped into two halves and then thrown into the wastebasket. Some have been thrown into my bonfires. Even looking at non-Topps baseball cards feels sacrilegious, which is probably why they get destroyed so fast in my home. Guess I'm old school, sorry.
