So, having a bit of time on my hands, I tackled the checklist for the 1934 Diamond Matchbooks. First off, cudos to all those who take the time to enter the vintage checklists with the team listed. It is not like we all have a set or two of these lying around to verify the team of each player.
But back to my experience. I first built the checklist with the players and the odd VAR, UER or ERR. Then I used a reference book to find what team each and every player played for in 1934. Those who were never traded were easiest but those who had been traded in the off season or during the season were more difficult. But I did not do too bad as I think I only had about 8-10 wrong teams. I was able to confirm those with google images and with a useful website (link below).
I also had to find the names that the players were listed in the database so as to make sure they were with the right PID and even had to create a few new ones. For example, Virgil Davis is also known as Spud Davis and there is a ball player named Forest F. Twogood who now has a PID in the database. But while I was doing this, I sometimes refered to the 1935-36 Diamond Matchbook checklist that already had been entered on the site. I found then that the teams for this checklist had not been entered other than a few. So I thought I would use the resources I had found and complete this list of teams as well. And that is when I discovered a problem. Some of the players in the 1935-36 set have different teams identified. For example, Bill Urbanski is of the Boston Bees and the Boston Red Sox. This is the website I used for identifying most of the teams http://www.columbiacitycollectibles.com/menu/baseball/Baseball-List-By-Card-Type/ST%20-%20Matchbook%20Covers_1.html. Urbanski is not the only player like this.
So, for those who have some of these matchbooks, don't change the team listed here just because yours says something different. Chances are there is more than one team for that player. A VAR would need to be added. Unfortunately, I have not found a checklist that lists all of the VAR.
And to add another issue, the matchbooks for all of the years seem to come in several colours - blue, green, red, black, orange, brown. Do these become parallels? I just had to throw that in.
