TL;DR version: This set was a total rush job by Topps and there are a boatload of ERR/COR/VARs that qualify for listing here.
OK, I've finally finished going through about 5k singles, various online resources, and discussions with a L8 on what should qualify for listing here. I have tracked quantities found to hopefully minimize impact to everyone's collections, and plan to keep the most common versions with existing collection info and have the rarer versions added as new entries. I'll be providing scans for all that I have and updating individual card Note/Note2 to clarify how to identify which version is which. My findings below by category, ranked from "Oh, wow, how did I not notice that" to "<collective groan/annoyance>", with card numbers impacted and any HOFer/stars noted ...
ERR/COR - Wrong Team
#465 Barry Larkin - 1992 Topps Gold had only a UER on #465, all are incorrectly labeled Astros in foil on front. 1992 Gold Winners started with the same, but it was later corrected to Reds. Astros is far more common, Reds somewhat scarce, regardless of what you see on COMC.
ERR/COR - Topps Gold Logo Upside Down
#655 (shown w/image darkened to more easily see the TG logo) & #770 - The upside down logos are a true rarity. Thankfully I knew a Brett Butler supercollector to acquire one of the only two copies he'd ever seen. #770, I still don't personally own a copy, but it has been widely reported in the ERR/COR community and I've seen images online to confirm it's existence (see Burbank's stock image for this card).
VAR - Large vs Small Topps Gold Logo
#2 Henderson RB (shown w/image darkened to more easily see the TG logo) - Only card known with this issue. Large logo (top) is tougher to find than small, but not difficult to find overall.
VAR - Sheet Code Differences
The Butler image above with the upside down logo also highlights another category of variations in this set. Note the top portion of the image has B* before the Topps copyright and the bottom has F*. All of the following card numbers have F* as one of the possible versions and A*/B*/C*/D* or E* as the other, sometimes the F* is the more common, on others it's the other sheet code: #s 5 (Winfield RB), 7, 26,40 (Ripken), 53, 75, 87, 111, 155, 157, 159, 160, 164, 173, 201, 205, 231, 272, 280, 283, 291, 303, 336, 351, 357, 360, 377, 388, 390, 402, 405, 408, 424, 445, 449, 471, 485, 498, 499, 542, 550 (Strawberry), 574, 581, 584, 585, 624, 632, 637, 650, 654, 655 (Butler shown w/upside down logo), 737
VAR - Topps Gold Logo Placement (High/Low)
Topps also shifted the placement of the Topps Gold logo on the back of many of the cards. Many of these are pretty blatant, like the #15 Denny Martinez shown below w/a high left shifted logo vs centered,
some are more subtle, like the #126 Prospects with Klesko w/top of the logo through HT: vs. top of the logo through BORN:.
Card #s impacted: 15, 69, 90 (Yount), 126, 137, 306, 365, 386 (Clark AS), 387 (Sandberg AS), 391, 392, 393 (Biggio AS), 394, 395 (Glavine AS), 396, 397, 398, 399 (Boggs AS), 400 (Ripken AS), 401 (Canseco AS), 403, 404, 406, 407, 473 (Prospects 3B), 618 (Prospects OF), 658, 734, 751, 756,
There are a few others rumored, but I have yet to personally confirm, and will not be listed here until they can be, #s: 171, Any All Star card not previously listed.
I'm open to comments, concerns, criticisms, corrections, adulation, whatever you've got to throw at me. Thanks for making it this far!
