NHL licencing restrictions at that time limited each card company to producing just two brands. So Fleer had Ultra and Flair, Topps had Premier (base brand) and Stadium Club, Pinnacle Brands had Score and Pinnacle, Leaf had Leaf and Donruss, and Upper Deck had Upper Deck and Parkhurst.
They were all scheming to release more product with "super-premium" cards becoming all the rage, so late in the season the NHL relented and said each company could produce a third brand *only* as a replacement for a series 2 of one the existing two brands. So Topps replaced Stadium Club Series 2 with Finest. Pinnacle replaced Score Series 2 with Select. Leaf replaced Donruss Series 2 with Limited. Fleer went completely the opposite way and replaced Flair Series 2 with their first Fleer hockey base brand. And Upper Deck replaced Parkhurst Series 2 with SP. (But then went ahead with Parkhurst Series 2 anyway, rebranding it as "Parkhurst SE" and licensed for sale only in Europe.)
