Why is the Collegiate Collection UNC basketball set called 1989-90 but the NC State set is called 1989?
https://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid/90818/1989-Collegiate-Collection-North-Carolina-State
They are both released by the same company at basically the same time. They both have the same design with the only differences being the border color, team logo and players. Just b/c it's a basketball release doesn't mean it needs to span 2 years. Both sets have the exact same 1989 registered trademark line on the back and many of the cards aren't of players that were currently on the roster for either team. Both sets should match each other in set titles, whether that is 1989-90 or just 1989. Thoughts?

It should be 1989. The set doesn't represent a single season (1989-90) it encompasses the school history. And the team nicknames should be in the titles "North Carolina Tar Heels", "NC State Wolfpack".

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I agree completely. Even the boxes have the team nicknames on them. I would add scans of the boxes I busted, but they are in horrible condition. That's actually why I busted all of the packs in a box of each. The packs were dry-rotting and mostly stuck to each other. The cards were still in mint condition though.
So I guess I should IR both sets for a name change?

I really disagree Billy! Skipping the extra "Collection" in your title that should be "Collegiate", you are going by just what is on the cards. What is on the boxes is what should matter here. That's what the selling point was when they were released. They are...

Just asking because I forgot how they were released or listed on here, but is it 89-90 because it was released as a two series set and came out in different years? I never had too many of these, but at times find myself drowning in the Notre Dame and Michigan State ones.

Ahh, ok. Then I'm stumped. I'll let you all debate the name of the set. I tend to agree with Billy though, the nickname doesn't seem featured on the cards or packaging then no need to put them in the name. It's not like they aren't all linked to the the team anyways.
