Bottom Line:
Question: Should the "Salmon/Pink Back" set be listed as parallel to the '58 set or as a separate '67/'68 set? Or.....
To get radical......should we create a "Salmon/Pink Back" Fun Pack set with all the cards from the 132 card sheet that were sold in Fun Packs"
Background:
Switzr's recent posting about collecting Topps Non-sport cards and Billy's recent acquistion of a partial set of Topps Hot Rods inspired me to start a Topps Non-sport list and I've ran into an issue. I'll try and be concise but brevity is not one of my strengths.
My issue starts with 1958 Topps Target Moon. It is a near identical set to the 1957 Topps Space set. This has created a little confusion on TCDB's checklist because some of the images are listed in the wrong set. Not a big deal, I will work IRs for those today.
The Target Moon set has two variations a "Blue Back" and a "Salmon/Pink Back". This is where the fun begins. The "Blue Backs" are an 88-card set believed to have been issued in 1958.
The "Salmon/Pink" back versions are a partial reissue distributed in 1967/68 as a 44-card skip-numbered set. These were sold in "Fun Packs" along with 44 cards from the Hot Rods set (the Billy connection), and 38 cards from the "Who Am I Set".
All of these cards were produced on a single 132 card sheet (The Who Am I Set contained four DPs).
It is speculated that the "Salmon/Pink Back" versions of these sets were intended to be part of a second series of cards for a game called "Win A Card". The game did poorly and Topps discontinued it before these cards were included. Since the cards were already produced, Topps distributed them in "Fun Packs" like they did with many discarded/unsold products.
Currently, TCDB lists the "Salmon/Pink Back" version of target moon as a parallel set to the 1958 Target Moon set. I don't think this is correct. The set is also listed separetly as "1967-68 Topps Target Moon Salmon Backs".

I think the right answer is as a separate '67/'68 set.
There is also an issue (multiple isssueas actually) with the Hot Rod set......but I'll save that for a later date.
My two-cents is worth slightly more than a penny.
