Cool list. For those where they player's real name is not listed on the database, how about putting their real name in the comments field? Somebody like Tom Gordon would not need it but a lot of the others could.
Good idea Billy | ||
If it can be found, maybe add the nickname origin.
Good idea. How about Blue Moon Odom? also, Preacher Roe & Schoolboy Rowe? http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/18/cid/26174/1949-Bowman-162-Preacher-Roe http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/18/cid/26228/1949-Bowman-216-Schoolboy-Rowe

Whitey Herzog aka Dorrel Norman Elvert (I think) it might be Everett, I can't remember now.
Harry "Peanuts" Lowery nicknamed by his uncle who said, "Why, he's no bigger than a peanut."
This is one of my favorite lists of all-time. And I just got that Whitey Herzog card. I'll be keeping an eye out for additions. Nice work. Is Razor Shines his real name? And I wonder if any cards have the name "Pudge Rodriquez." I might have to look into these important matters.... v3
Razor Shines doesn't qualify for this list as Razor was actually his middle name, go figure.
Clarence "Choo Choo" Coleman; given to him by childhood friends because he was so fast.
Great list. One who came to mind was David "Boomer" Wells http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/1642/cid/32923/2003-Topps-574-Boomer-Wells
Hey guys, thanks for the positive feedback, I will continue to add as I go. But I was wondering, would you guys like to see this done for football and basketball as well?
Coco Crisp? Apparently, he liked his nickname so much he legally changed his name to it. Still count? v3
Technically since his name is Covelli, it is a name change/shortening, not really a nickname
Sure, football, basketball, and don't forget hockey...Gump Worsley, Toe Blake, Punch Imlach, Happy Day. I'd keep each sport a separate list. And I agree with you about name shortenings and changes.
The Cot Deal card made me think of Orville Inman "Coot" Veal. Given to him by his high school coach who had heard the name on an old barnstorming team.
Thanks for the advice C2C! I planned on doing them as separate lists and I'll keep adding to this one of course?
Shame on me, a Mets fan. I forgot about Elijah "Pumpsie" Green, Pumpsie would never disclose its origin other than that his mother called him that from a very young age. His daughter Keisha says he's never even told her.
I disagree that "Coco" is short for "Covelli." Just "Co," and I'd agree. but the Coco thing is clearly related to cereal. It's these types of controversial decisions for which you must be responsible when creating a list. Heavy is the head that creates the list. I look forward to the other sports. v3
V3, you're right, I looked it up, and I will add Coco to the list tomorrow probably
Elliot "Bump" Wills; took some searching but found an interview; one of the best I've heard...he got the nickname because of his "gymnastics in the womb", called "Little Bumpy".
Thanks! And the reason for the nickname is even better! I love to learn trivia, even for sports I don't actively collect, so I am really enjoying this and looking forward to the other sports.
I didn't see a "Hack Wilson" card. He was born Lewis Robert Wilson. A number of his cards just have him as Hack Wilson, and he is listed here on TCDB that way as well.
This is another cool list you have going Josh. I actually have 6 of the cards so far.
I see you want to keep it to just 1950 till now. If tribute cards count then Babe Ruth (George Herman Ruth) has a ton of them beyond 1950.
Birdie Tebbetts, one story, his aunt gave it to him because his voice sounded like a chirpping bird
Rip Repulski, Repulski can’t remember who in the St. Louis farm system gave him the nickname “Rip.” Until then he was called “Al” and "Alto” (Al-toe) as in Al the Toe. He was a football placekicker before baseball.
Rube Walker, as batboy for the Lenoir Red Sox was given nickname of his idol and star of the team, Rube Robinson Turk Lown, receieved nickname as a child because of his fondness for eating turkey Ebba St. Claire, given to him by his father Bobo Newsom, Newsom never could remember anybody's name, so he called everyone Bobo and thus earned that nickname for himself. Prior to that his nickname was Buck. Smoky Burgess, varying sources and stories about his nickname Dizzy Trout, self-given because he wanted to be as famous as Dizzy Dean Hoot Evers, named as child for his favorite cowboy movie hero, Hoot Gibson Windy McCall, a talkative person, given by Ted Williams who told a Boston Globe sportswriter that he knew about McCall, "The windy one told me when I was pitching batting practice to bring up some of my good bats." Bunky Stewart, named after a comic strip character
Rick is a common nickname for Richard. So, how did Robert James Monday get the nickname Rick?
Harry "Cookie" Lavagetto He acquired his nickname from his Oakland Oaks teammates, who called him "Cookie's boy," because he had been hired by Oaks' president Victor "Cookie" Devincenzi. Octavio "Cookie" Rojas comes from his Spanish nickname "Cuqui", which means adorable/cute, a popular nickname in Cuba that American sportswriters Anglicized.
Ken "Kemer" Brett When he was a newborn, his older brother John mispronounced "Kenneth" as "Kemer". |
