The Black Lives Matter Movement and Police Brutalityby Uneebamarya - 0 cards (Last updated on Aug 17, 2019) |
As sad as it is, we live in a time when police misconduct is real. Yes, in nearly all communities, no matter the size and population, there are many cases of police officers violating their duty. Of course, this is illegal and the victims suffer physical and psychological consequences.
One such group of victims is black people or people of color. Due to multiple social events and prompted by an epilogue of a case in court, the Black Lives Matter movement was born. Its impact was huge on the topic of police brutality as well as the everyday lives of Americans. The movement even went across the pond to the United Kingdom.
So, we let’s take a closer look at the roots of the movement as well as what it evolved in in recent times!
The Beginnings
It all started in the not-so-distant 2013. Trayvon Martin was shot and later died. He was an unarmed black teenager. The individual who did it didn’t answer for the murder.
That seemed to enrage numerous activists. Among them was Garza, who wrote a Facebook post about it. In it, she made a statement that black lives matter like all of the rest. Thus, the hashtag was born and it became viral. It gained further momentum with each police misconduct event. There were multiple protests taking place, too.
Today’s Black Lives Matter
The movement became a formal organization with its own aim. That was to bring the attention of the public to the number of black people killed by members of the police. It didn’t take long (1 year, to be exact) for Black Lives Matter to move outside of the country borders it was born into.
So, today it clarifies itself as a national organization that wants to show the world how valid and important the lives of people of color are. But it didn’t stop there. The organization works on multiple issues that are relevant to the black community such as LGBTQ rights, rights of black women, people of color with disabilities and more.
Campaign Zero and the Future of BLM
A couple of years ago the BLM launched the platform Campaign Zero. Further expanding it is in the plans for the future. Through it and other similar activities, they want to change the legislature on state and local level as well as in America as a whole.
The activists believe that they can live in safer surroundings if, among other things, the relationships in their communities improve and the people are held accountable. Some of the ways they think to achieve that are through body cams on the police officers, suitable training, limiting used force, demilitarization, real justice, and so on.
A Final Word
Black Lives Matter has encouraged people who have been victims of police misconduct or police brutality to step up and tell their part of the story.
If you count yourself to be among them, then it may be wise to seek the services of a police brutality lawyer. You can browse the Internet or special sites like USAttorneys.com, for instance, for more information.
