1980-81 OPC Goalies

by Blargh - 35 cards (Last updated on Jun 27, 2020)

1. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #8 Phil Myre

18-7-15, .875, 3.58, 0
Last career card for Myre. Played one game in the 1980 Stanley Cup Finals. Gave up 6 goals, 5 on the powerplay and one shorthanded. Islanders went 5 for 5 on the PP.

2. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #22 Jim Craig

1-2-1, .841, 3.79, 0
Hero of the Miracle on Ice. Craig was never able to parlay that success to the NHL. He played for three teams in three NHL seasons. The Atlanta Flames cashed in on Craig's fame, trading him in the 1908 offseason to the Bruins for two draft picks, ione of those picks turned into Mike Vernon. This is Craig's only NHL card during his career.

3. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #31 Mike Liut

32-23-9, 3.18, 2
Led the league in Wins.
Omitted from the 79-80 OPC set, Liut makes his cardboard debut in this set.
Liut was actually drafted by the Oilers in the WHA dispersal draft but the Oilers decided to make Dave Dryden and Eddie Mio priority selections. Liut could have been a HHOFer if he was an Oiler.

4. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #47 Gilles Meloche

27-20-5, .897, 3.06
All-Star Game
Gilles's ninth OPC card. First card with his mask. I am not sure why Meloche is wearing a plain white mask. Meloche had a far more colourful mask that he was already wearing during the 79-80 season.

5. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #60 Billy Smith

15-14-7, .898, 2.96, 2
Fresh off a Stanley Cup victory, Billy strikes a Ken Dryden pose.

6. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #68 Dan Bouchard

23-19-10, .898, 3.19, 2
An original Atlanta Flame, Bouchard gets his last card as a Flame. A head shot and tucked in towel shot, similar to the 80-81 card of Phil Myre, his creasemate in 1972, the Flames expansion season.

7. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #77 John Garrett

16-24-11, .866, 3.99, 0
Was the starting goalie of the Whalers inaugural NHL game. They lost 4-1.

8. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #95 Mike Palmateer

16-14-3, .873, 3.69, 2
A contract dispute sent Leafs fan favorite, Palmateer to the Capitals, and this airbrush job.

9. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #110 Rogatien Vachon

20-30-8, .873, 3.62, 4
An offseason trade sends HHOFer Rogie out of Detroit and into Boston. Rogie led the NHL is losses in 79-80.

10. 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee #121 Wayne Stephenson

18-24-10, .880, 3.58, 0
Our first painted mask sighting in the 80-81 set, unfortunately it's only partial. His last career card as he retires following the 80-81 season.

Very cool list. I would give the Bronze Medal 🏅 to John Garrett.  Like that card and have added it to my want list!

Great list. Agree with your favorites. I remember that had that John Davidson, but not anymore. Probably traded or it was thrown away.
