by Blargh - 32 cards (Last updated on Jun 27, 2020)

1. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #10 Rogatien Vachon

25-19-6, .862, 3.34, 1
Rogie took over the starting job from retiring HHOFer Gerry Cheevers. Cameo from Olympic hero Jim Craig.

2. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #21 Don Edwards

23-10-2, .898. 2.96, 3
A scintillating picture of Don making his laps during warm-up. Don tied for the league led in shutouts, 3(!) in 1980-81.

3. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #23 Bob Sauve

16-10-9, .880, 3.18, 2
The internet is conflicted regarding the details of the Sauve to Wings trade. Some sits have it listed as a future considerations trade. Other have it as part of the Gare-McCourt. All sites have both trades listed as Dec 2nd. Regardless, it was a shot stay for Sauve.
Sauve was 6-1-5 with a 2.76 GAA when traded.

4. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #37 Pat Riggin

21-16-4, .883, 3.84, 0
A mid-season trade of incumbent Danial Bouchard opens door for Riggin to be the starter. Goes 12-4-2 after the trade, was 9-12-2 before. Rookie Card and only card as a Flame.

5. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #44 Rejean Lemelin

14-6-7, .901, 3.24, 2
Struggled after trade of Daniel Bouchard. Went 5-4-2 after trade, while going 9-2-4 before.

6. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #54 Tony Esposito

29-23-14, .890, 3.76, 0
An action shot? Tony led the league in games player an minutes played. It was the third straight season he led the league in minutes player and sixth in the last seven.

7. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #68 Murray Bannerman

2-10-2, .866, 4.31, 0
Bannerman had a rough start to his Blackhawks career, going 2-10-2 in 1980-81.

8. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #80 Glenn Resch

20-11-7, .891, 3.21, 3
Traded at the trade deadline, OPC was not able to snap a shot of Resch with his new team. Chico tied for the league lead in shutouts with 3. All three shutouts were as an Islander.
Second time the cage/mask combo appeared on an OPC card. You can still see the Islanders colours under the plastic neck guard.

9. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #88 Gilles Gilbert

11-24-9, .866, 4.02, 0
After being traded from Boston, Gilles puts up career worst numbers (to date) in his first season as a Red Wing. It only gets worse from here, Gilles.

10. 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #99 Larry Lozinski

6-11-7, .858, 4.29, 0
A one and done. Larry played a single season in the NHL and it was enough to garner a rookie card. He was beat out by rookie Corrado Micelef in the Wings 1981 training camp. Larry played a few more seasons in the minors and retired in 1983.

I don't understand why Boston traded Gilbert to Detroit for Vachon.  Rogie was four years older and played lousy in Detroit.  Gilbert never had a bad year with the Bruins.

*******

The Sabres had an excellent tandem with Edwards & Sauve in goal for about five years and the rest of the team was pretty good, too ... they should have done better in the playoffs.  As for Edwards' league-leading three shutouts, goalies didn't wear Michelin Man equipment back then.

*******

It was crazy how the lousy Rangers team of '80-'81 knocked off the Kings (99 pts.) and Blues (107 pts.) in the playoffs.  Baker allowed 33 goals in 10 games against those teams, but then he got strafed for 22 goals in 4 games against the Islanders.  ... and then he vanished!  He had virtually no real career after that.  I don't know what happened, it's not like he was a temporary fill-in for a superstar goalie.
