1910-19 Coupon Cigarettes (T213)

Notes

The T213 Coupon Baseball series consists of three distinct regional releases produced by the New Orleans based W.R. Irby branch of the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. The cards were inserted into packages of Coupon Cigarettes and were distributed between 1910 - 1919. All three releases are classified as T213 in the American Card Catalog.

The T213 series is often split into three subsets identified as T213-1, T213-2, and T213-3. Some collectors also refer to them as Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.

The T213-1 (Type 1) subset consists of 68 cards that were printed in 1910. Type 1 card fronts depict an image of a player surrounded by a white border with the player’s name and team printed in brown text at the bottom of the card. The card backs advertise Coupon Cigarettes with the word “mild” printed between “Coupon” and “Cigarettes”. The cards measure 1 ½” x 2 5/8” and were printed on heavy paper stock making them more fragile than the later releases which were printed on heavier cardboard stock. Type 1 cards are the rarest of the T213 series.

The T213-2 (Type 2) subset is the largest of the three subsets containing 188 cards that were produced from 1914 – 1916. The card fronts are nearly identical to the earlier release except the player’s name and team are printed in blue text instead of brown. The card back advertises Coupon Cigarettes and list the price as “20 for 5 cents”. Like the Type 1 cards, the cards in this subset measure 1 ½” x 2 5/8”.

The T213-3 (Type 3) subset consists of 70 cards that were produced in 1919. Type 3 cards are smaller than the two previous issues measuring 1 3/8” x 2 9/16”. The card fronts have the same design as the Type 2 cards with the player’s name and team printed in blue text. The card backs advertise Coupon Cigarettes and list the price as “16 for 10 cts.”. An unknown number of Type 3 cards have an extremely rare back variation known as a “Factory 8 Overprint”. This variation consists of a solid black box over the “Factory No 3” notation at the bottom of the card with “Factory No 8” printed above it.
