1988 Donruss

Anyone remember how easy it was to sort these cards out of wax packs? Each half was packaged in numerical order from two different portions of the complete run (ex. 201-208, the 353-359). If you bought a complete wax box, you could put together 82% with no duplicates, but we know that was never the case.
I was 6 and this is the first pack of cards I remembering opening
I have to agree with the below comment regarding lacking rookie power, though I liked the set overall. Came out in my 3rd year of collecting around 5th grade. Toys-r-us messed up there pricing at one point and sold me boxes for the $.53 pack price even after we informed them. Ripped at least a case. Think that contributed to me being the wax ripping degen I am today.
In my opinion, overall a poor set that is not the most visually pleasing, but for someone like me who focuses on Errors & Variations, I keep busy with the Donruss sets from 1987 - 1992.

First pack ever. 1988 Donruss. Jose Canseco was the top card. To this very day, I still collect Canseco. The feeling I got hasn't left me since 1988.B8
This is the set that started it all for me. I love the design. It's sad there isn't much value in these cards.
I know it's pure nostalgia, but I like late 80s Donruss. Just broke a box of these and there's not a ton to write home about with the players, but I genuinely like the front design. And I've always been fond of the sameness of the backs especially players' full names. But, yes, pure nostalgia factor.
Looks like I am not the only one that bought a pack of these as their first pack of baseball cards. Like everyone else I was looking for my favorite player, which at the time was Ken Oberkfell. So I was more lucky than most about getting my favorite player. Then he got traded to the Pirates, and I changed to my favorite player to another 3rd baseman Mike Schmidt. He is still my favorite player even though he retired just after I started collecting his cards. For my 40th birthday my cousin who is another card collector got me his rookie card, which is tied for first for the best birthday present ever.
Overproduced, ugly and minimal Rookie value.
First pack of cards I ever opened, thus marking my entry into collecting just as the junk wax era was really taking off! Still nostalgic about this set though. Looking through my cards I can probably pick out the ones from that first pack because they're pretty beat up.
My dad bought me a pack of these cards when I was 8; it was my first. I still remember the awe of getting Cal Ripken's Diamond King; it was my favorite card for a long time. In fact I still have it; it's beat up, of course, but I keep it for my first pack of cards.
This was the first set of Baseball cards which I ever owned/opened. I received the set on my 7th Birthday, and I have not looked back since!
For me, this is my all-time favorite set! The pictures are amazing and the border is not bland.
There aren't many great cards in this set, but I've actually always liked the design of this set, as well as the '89 Donruss.
Not a very good rookie crop to start with and being overproduced just makes this set not very appealing.
This was a fun set to try to complete back in 88, but it is way...way over produced. I like the idea that they actually put some thought into the borders of these cards, and a few years after also. |
