I submitted a checklist and set for 1988 Topps American baseball. The set is already listed under Topps UK Mini's. If someone has permission to delete it could you do it please. Thanks, john

I don't blame you. I always thought they were called Topps American, that's what the wrapper states. And I don't consider them an "Oddball" set. I'd recommend sending a message to Admin asking to delete your duplicate entry, rename Topps UK Mini to Topps American, and possibly move it to "Major Release".

I would oppose a name change. This is how they're pretty universally known, at least in the states (i know the USA isn't actually a universe). It would confuse me, and probably many others, if the name was changed. Like Topps Mini Leaders, from the same years, which also don't say Mini on the wrapper, but everyone knows what you're talking about.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Well, many NNO sets become "universally" known by numbers because of Beckett. And I for one was confused by the UK name. I don't know how they got the "UK" nomenclature (possibly Beckett again). I've read different references that say they were a British market exclusive. That is absolutely, positively incorrect. I bought them here, in the U.S., in 1988 and only knew them by the name on the wrapper and box set.
I agree some set's names get different nomenclaures. I've had Admin remove quite a few set entries that were actually duplicates of each other because of different names used. But as a collector, many years after purchase, all we have to go by is what we have in our hands...cards, boxes, or wrappers (unless we have perfect memories...lol). Maybe a better set name would be "1988 Topps UK American" (actually saw this on one site).
But now that I know where they've been hiding on the database, I can add them to my collection.

UK American sounds reasonable. That would come up with my UK search and with your American search.

Also, I'm messaging a baseball fan in England to see if he remembers these. The fact that Tim Wallach's weight is listed as 14 stone tells me they were intended to be a UK release.

David -- excellent point. Probably why I had trouble locating it when I did a search. Of course, that was back when I was new to the site. I'm much better at searching now.
hmmmm, you've given me an idea...search tags. An area in set entries to put search tags. Useful for any sets that have AKAs (also known as). Currently, searches only hit on words in the set name.

the little quips on the card were meant to educate the English about baseball since they are primarily a soccer country.
