I like the overproduced era as part of an overall collection. I do wish we knew what overall print runs were though so we knew by year or era how to compare the various eras.

I really dislike underproduced sets, becuase I just want the cards to enjoy. I don't care about the investment. Since I almsot never pay more than $5 for a card, I know there will be a lot of sets I will miss out on, but there are still plenty to collect.

The purpose for posing the question was basically to understand why certain sets (insert any company's late 80s to 90s production) are viewed or referenced negatively as overproduced. Overproduced connotes too many made. In my mind when I read comments about the junk era (I hate that term, but have used it often) I wonder if I'm strange in that I still get excited about the prospects of completing my Astros team set of '90 Donruss. I'm in no way saying that I'd equal anything in that set with a 1961 Topps common. But I am saying that the use of the term overproduced should be replaced by non-investor-type collectors like me (and others who collect them because they are easily available) and instead refer to them simply as '90 Donruss, or '91 Fleer.

I like the junk era. Nice to get some unopened product on the cheap just for fun.

I spoke to someone earier today who buys huge collections, what they told me i thought was ridiculous.
According to them everything from the 80s and 90s is junk, they throw it away by the trash can load at a time. I said what? send them to me, dont throw them away. I guess they are buying up collections just to find any expensive cards and in it for the money, unless they was BS me.

I wish my hiatus was taken during the 'junk wax' years - that way, it would be a lot easier and cheaper to get the sets I missed. I will still buy a box of cards from those years even if I'm not crazy about the brand/design - my LCS has several boxes from those years from $4-$10. Hard to pass that up.
I think the people who care are mostly those looking to turn a profit on their cards.

We have to be careful about how we describe people who collect certain things that are not our personal preference.
I think most people in the hobby look at prices. They know what their cards are worth. They know what the cards on their want list is worth. There is a financial aspect to the hobby that, unless you have an unlimited budget, you need to understand the values of the cards you're buying or selling (or tradng). I don't know one person on here who would trade me a Nolan Ryan RC (mint condition, of course) for the 75-100 extras I have floating around here, mostly from 1985-1992. But you'd get 100 cards!
Maybe you don't piece together your collection based on the values of cards (I have some 1-cent cards in my HOF binders), but you do know and follow and understand values - and they do mean something to you. (And if they really don't, I have a boatload of cards I'd love to trade to you for only a couple cards.)
