Well put Dan. I have bought several collections from people of the era most are referring to just to get the binders and the plastic sheets. I have been honest with all of them; that I already have all of the cards they have and that I am paying them for the supplies. I think the set I have the most of now is the 1991 Donruss set - 17 complete and I am sure I could complete a few more from my "For Trade" pile. But most of us on here are collectors, not investors. We enjoy the cards for what they are. That is why I am still here, because of the community on this site.

I collect only pro set now and love that they are overproduced as I should be able to get about 99% of the total collection (all sports and non sports) where as if I collected today's sets I would struggle to complete one set with all the parallels and inserts, other reason I love pro set is for the large set sizes

Pro set produced some of my favorite football sets. No other set does a more complete job of covering the players and events of the season. All of the cards, including inserts, are relatively easy to acquire. Pro Set Platinum is also a great looking set.

I really miss Pro Set. I remember when they came out in 1989 I was intrigued, but the 1990 Football set hooked me. That initial hockey set was awesome too.

I think "overproduction" is a typically viewed as a negative term, but it's quite accurate in this case. If a product is produced in quantities greater than the demand for it, that makes it overproduced. That being said, I'm fine with it. I like many of the cards from that era. I hate some of the sets like 1990 Fleer baseball, but I also dislike some of the modern sets, and some of the vintage sets too. And I still collect cards from that era. But I'm not going to pay $1 for any card from 1988 Donruss. I realize they are essentially worthless, though still fun to collect. Likewise, I'm not going to pay $20 for any 2017 rookie card, because I realize that player will have thousands of cards in no time flat, and that flooding the market means there will always be something cheaper I can get of him. And I hope I never open a 1/1 card because I would feel guilty possessing a card that none of you guys could have too.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Please don't refrain from participating in discussions, G. I read your original post and didn't find anything offensive. Expressing a cogent opinion that counters another's should not be considered offensive. Let me reiterate that I, Sportzcommish, one with whom you've dealt with and have conversed periodically over the past few months via PM, have used the term, too. It's not a matter of casting stones. I'm simply attempting to focus an appreciation for a product that many of us seem to collect and the ease with which we can obtain these sets shouldn't diminish our love for the whole or part of the set we choose to collect.
To me referring to overproduction as a constant description of the product is associating a value based more on the financial side of collecting than a love for the hobby. I wanted to point out the difference between what I believe most of us do, collect, and what some in our community do, invest, and both are legitimate, but neither is wrong.

I wish all pro set were easy to find as there are some quite rare items ie Steve young vip promo, the club pro set cards I struggle with as well as the few that show up are going for $40 plus for a nine card set, one day I'll get them though, also loved the update sets they did with traded players during the season
