1969 Topps #238 Ken Johnson Front

21. 1969 Topps #238 Ken Johnson

Ken Johnson

d.15 (36 yr. old Pitcher) 9 games

Ken joined the 1969 Cubs in August for extra bullpen help and pitched in only 9 games. Ken was a knuckle ball throwing pitcher for 7 teams over a 13 year MLB career. While pitching for the Colt .45's in 1966, Ken had the distinction of being the only pitcher to ever lose a nine inning complete game no-hitter. Pete Rose, who had reached base on an error by Johnson, scored on a throwing error by Nellie Fox. Finding Ken's signed cards without a personalization can be tough. He passed away at 82 in 2015.

Don was an All-American baseball and basketball player at the University of Mississippi. A switch hitter who played 16 years for 3 clubs over his career, Don finished up as a player/manager for the crosstown White Sox. He was considered one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball in the late 60's and early 70's. Don's son Keith, played in 11 MLB games. I've met Don a number of times over the years at many public signings. Don owns a real estate business in Mississippi now.

Don was a 6 time All-Star, including 1969 where he was joined by the rest of the Cubs infield as All-Stars. Don won Gold Gloves at shortstop in 1969 and 1970. Don is one of 3 Cubs from the 1969 team to win the Lou Gehrig memorial award. Ernie Banks won in 1967, Ron Santo in 1973 and Don in 1978.

24. 1969 Topps - Deckle #18 Don Kessinger

Kessinger was the Sox manager during Disco Demolition Night July 12, 1979 at Comiskey Park. A crate filled with disco records was blown up by disc jockey Steve Dahl on the field between games of a doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers. Damage caused by the explosion and rowdy fans required the White Sox to forfeit the nightcap.

25. 1971 Topps #458 White Sox 1971 Rookie Stars (Ron Lolich / Dave Lemonds)

Dave Lemonds

(20 yr. old rookie Pitcher) 2 games

Dave was a 20 year old rookie left handed pitcher that appeared in only 2 games for the Cubs in 1969. He didn't return until 1972 with the White Sox where he finished his career by playing in another 31 games. Dave is another of the players I had the chance to meet after suggesting to a local store that they should have him as an autograph guest. He has also been a very accomodating signer through the mail.

I have 3 of 3 Topps cards autographed. (10 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #43 Joe Niekro Front

26. 1969 Topps #43 Joe Niekro

Joe Niekro

d.06 (24 yr. old starting Pitcher) 4 games

Joe was the younger brother of HOF pitcher Phil Niekro. Taught the knuckleball by their father, their 539 wins are the most by any brothers in MLB history. Joe pitched 22 years for 7 different teams. He was traded early in 1969 along with Gary Ross to the Padres for Dick Selma. In 1987 he was suspended for 10 games when the umpire found a nail file in his pocket. See the video on YouTube. I met Joe before he died in 2006 after a brain aneurysm.

Don Nottebart

d.07 (33 yr. old Relief Pitcher) 16 games

Don pitched 9 years for 5 different teams. On May 17, 1963 Don threw the first no-hitter in Houston's history. In 1965 he gave up Willie Mays' 500th home run. Don pitched 18 innings of relief for the Cubs in 1969, his final season which ended from a muscle tear. I had the opportunity to speak with Don on the phone to ask him if I could send him some items to sign. He graciously accepted my request. Don passed away at 71 in 2007.

28. 1969 Topps #88 Rich Nye

Rich Nye

(24 yr. old Pitcher) 34 games

Rich got a Civil Engineering degree in 1966, the same year he was drafted by the Cubs. A lefty, he pitched for 3 teams over his 5 year career. He was converted from starter to reliever for the 1969 season. After injuries ended his career, Rich went to veterinary school and became an exotic and avian specialist in 1976. Using money he made as a commodities trader, he opened the first exotic-only specialist practice in the US. My collection includes a pair of Rich's used cleats and hats from the Cubs and Expos.

1969 Topps #247 Gene Oliver Front

29. 1969 Topps #247 Gene Oliver

Gene Oliver

d.07 (34 yr. old Catcher) 23 games

Gene spent his 10 year career primarily as a backup catcher for 5 teams. Gene claimed to be the only player to get a double, home run, and strikeout in the same at bat. A line drive sure double was called foul. A home run on the next pitch was called back because time had been called. He eventually struck out. Gene backed up Randy Hundley in 1969 and caught Holtzman's no hitter. He was Social Director for Hundley's Fantasy Camps and was a frequent signer at Cubs Conventions. Gene died in 2007.

I have 11 of 11 Topps cards autographed. (18 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #354 Nate Oliver Front

30. 1969 Topps #354 Nate Oliver

Nate Oliver

(28 yr. old 2B) 44 games

Nate spent most of his 7 year career as a Dodger second baseman. He was traded to the Cubs in 1969 by the Yankees for Lee Elia. He finished his career after appearing in 44 games for the 1969 Cubs. Nate spent his career after baseball by managing, coaching and instructing for a number of other baseball organizations. Nate shares his RC with Bill Freehan on a 1963 SP card making it tougher to obtain and get signed. I've been able to meet Nate in person for his autograph on a few occasions.

I have 6 of 6 Topps cards autographed. (14 total signed cards)

Thanks Billy. I think you'd enjoy all the details I've catalogued involving my autograph collections. Each autographed item includes the date of acquisition, the source and the cost. I too wrote everything down by hand on paper. It all needs to be transferred to an Excel (or Access) doc so I can have better access to the info. I wish I'd kept better records with regards to the costs involved in acquiring the item prior to it being signed. For example, my 1962 Topps signed Jim Hickman only details the cost of acquiring the autograph, but the card itself was probably $40 before it was signed because it's the last card in the set.
