Random Card of the Day

Year: 1993

Set: Maxx Premier Plus (Rate)

Card: #164 Vic Kangas

“ This set was the first chrome style set in NASCAR history. there would be two more Premier Plus sets, and Press Pass issued two chrome sets, in the late 2000s. I am 4 cards away from completing this set, despite doing a box. I have to admit I know almost nothing about Vic Kangas, just what I've read on the card backs. That was a big part of what was missing in NASCAR cards in later years, the crew chiefs and team owners. There is more to the sport than just the drivers. With Press Pass out of business now, I guess it's a moot point. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Few know that this card holds the world record for most "93"s on it. ” -NJdevils

“ Nice shirt, LOL! ” -carthage44

“ Nice sweater... Wait, that's only hockey... ” -jlaz10

Billy, when you say that Press Pass is out of business, does that mean nobody has a license to make Nascar cards now?  That's too bad.  Even though I don't collect them, I know a lot of people like you enjoy them.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

That is correct. Upper Deck has expressed interest but does not want to deal with the fact that every sponsor, driver and team demands payment to use their likeness. It's not like ball-sports as there is no union in NASCAR (When they tried to form one in 1969, it led to the head of NASCAR threatening to ban everyone who joined for life...which is very much believable, as he'd done it before)

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

To put it mildly, that sucks.

Succinct and very much accurate. I was never a huge fan of Press Pass, but my love of NASCAR always kept me buying their products.

Sponsors demanding to be paid for their likeness?!? That's crazy to me, they should be subsidizing a NASCAR set, it's advertising for them...

That's how it used to be in the 1990s. You look at the set listings, you see tons of sponsor produced (or I should say, produced for sponsor) sets...then it all changed in the late 1990s. Around 1997 or so. And now it's killed Press Pass, and nearly killed Action (The diecast company, who used to insert cards with their issues)

And the sponsors get free advertising for the life of the cards.    I only had  a few racing cards, and "Winston" is displayed prominently even though they are prohibited from advertising nowadays.
