Year: 1952

Set: Topps Wings Friend or Foe (R707-4) (Rate)

Card: #32 C-74 Globemaster I

“ One of my all-time favorite non-sports sets. This was my very first card from the set, which I purchased at a card show sometime in the mid 1990s. At the time it was the oldest card in my collection. I don't know why I got it when I did as I did not become a true airplane fan until 2009, roughly 15 years later. I've worked on this set extensively over the years and I'm fairly close to completing it, roughly 20 cards away, although not all of them in my collection are in great shape, I'm thrilled just to have them. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Once again Billy, cool RCotD! ” -bkklaos

“ I'm going to have to go with.....friend!! ” -RoyalChief

“ Billy, that is one nice set you've got there! ” -CluelessJoe

“ Just a wonderful card. ” -NJdevils

“ Very cool vintage Non-Sport. Back when trading cards were real trading cards. I have 2 or 3 cards from this set. If I ever complete this set it would be soo cool. ” -captkirk42

“ Since my grandfather was a gunner on a plane similar to this one in WWII, VERY COOL! ” -carthage44

“ Man! Back in the day, I remember trading two "C-74 Globemasters" and a "Comanche helicopter" for a "Dassault Mirage F1" card. Did I ever take that other kid to the cleaners! ” -dilemma19

“ I suggest a comparison of the backs of this set and the 1952 Topps set. They are almost the same, despite their obvious differences in subject matter. Neat looking overall. ” -DarkSide830

1952 Topps "Wings Friend or Foe" More commonly just called "Wings" I think the "Friend or Foe" is a subtitle anyway.

Its here in the db: http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewAllSet.cfm/sid/75061

and for fun another resource: http://www.nslists.com/wingstop.htm

This set reminds me of my 8th grade history teacher, a military buff, who used to make all of us write letters to various military bases (all branches) requesting photos of ships, planes, tanks, whatever, that we could use for reports.  He had exact addresses for each of us (none of us wrote to the same place) and probably told us exactly what to request.  There might have even been foreign militaries involved; I can't remember.  The kicker was that we all turned the pictures in with our end-of-year reports, and after receiving our grades, HE KEPT ALL THE COOL PHOTOS!!!  My guess is that he had written so many letters requesting the free stuff, they started ignoring him, so he had to take up an alternative method to build his collection.

-------------------------------

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
