Year: 1983

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #242 Dan Ross

“ Very solid design. Looks more 70s than 80s to me...I wonder how long it is between design creation and publication? ” -Billy Kingsley

“ At first glance I thought this was a 60's or 70's card so I was going to say decent looking vintage card, but 1983 is far too new to be this boring. The front is just so bland, the back is good, almost like 91 Topps baseball. I would give the front a 2 and the back a 9. ” -davidhandberry

“ A simple, classic design. Topps football cards from the '80s are truly one of my all-time favorite things in the hobby. By the way, I wish the Bengal would revert to this style of uniform. ” -mkaz80

“ I like this set a lot. One of my favorite in all of Topps football. ” -switzr1

“ Nice I remember these. In recent months I had gotten a cool deal on a Jim McMahon RC card from this set. It took a long time to get to me because the seller was in Canada. Glad this RCotD is actually from '83 and not one of the Archives or Heritage retros of a new player. I still like those but always prefer the original. ” -captkirk42

“ That there is a nice card. I like the back especially. The way the different sections are boxed and titled, makes viewing it very easy on the eyes. ” -CollectingAfterDeath

“ Love it. I really miss the days where there was only 3-5 companies each with only 1 set in the major releases. ” -muskie027

Somehow being a 36 year old card just doesn't quite seem enough. Looks even older and not too bad of one at that,

I wonder if set design was influenced by the strike the previous year, a la 1995 Fleer Baseball.

I agree with muskie I loved the days when there were fewer card companies and they only made one set per sprot per year. The problem with the 80s/90s "Overproduesed" years was there were dozens of companies making dozens of sets each in the millions instead of just a few 100 thousand. Now we have only a handful of compaines making dozens of sets with smaller base sets and thousands of inserts, parallels and short printed indiviual cards. sometimes they short print the damn base cards.

A bland design, but I have such a soft spot in my heart for '83 Topps football.  This is the first set I truly collected as a kid.  I even remember getting a box of these on Xmas morning.  Through the wonderful TCDB community I managed to complete my set!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I’m not sure what a I like more, the budding mustache or the genuine look of confusion on Ross’ face.
