The PO isn't really losing money in a sense. About a decade ago (maybe a little longer) Congress forced a pension policy change on them. The PO now has to pre-pay pensions for employees who, in essence, haven't even started yet. Yep, they have to basically account for future employees. I remember seeing the reports where the PO actually posted a profit for a years, but once accounting for the pensions and a few other forced costs that where the loss came in. It has been a bit so there might be other reasons now, but that was the case at one point.

I believe the Commish has the answer, at least for me. I'm been suggesting PayPal shipping for over a year. Unless you are mailing an envelope of cards, $.70 non-machinable, you are at the mercy of the USPS. Even eBay requires an adjustment in your shipping habits. Sportlots also needs adjusting, especially auctions.
Once you enter your shipping info into PayPal, it adjusts the cost automatically and no worry, ship away. PayPal business even gives you extra perks. NO PO surprises for this guy ! And as an extra plus, I have THE All-Star mail lady in the US, Picks up and drops off in my mailbox or on my porch. Super Gal !

Yes, they have to pay for pension, I believe, 50 years in advance, so theoretically, they are in the whole. Though with so many people bills on line, they have taken a hit by losing a lot of the smallest, lightest mail.

They could probably pay a few pensions just on the postage for the credit card and loan offers I receive every day! I paid off a loan last year, and the whole world seems to know about it, because everybody wants to lend me money now.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

To answer the question for sure, yes the USPS has to fund retirement plans in advance. The current structure is paying for future employees that AREN'T EVEN BORN YET! That and the multiple unions are what is making the USPS "lose billions of dollars" each year. Because of the current structure, USPS can never be privatized either. No company will ever take on that financial burden so far in advance. What brings people to work for them is the high pay-rate (eventually) and the fantastic benefits. My Mom was severely burned in a propane explosion while camping in 2001. 75% of her body was 3rd degree burns. It took several skins grafts and being in a medical coma for nearly 3 months just to get her to the point that she could leave the hospital. Her medical insurance paid over 80% of the approximate million dollar cost for her stay in the hospital. It was over 2 years before she could go back to work and she was still getting paid through the insurance. Part of their pension plan also includes stock options where you can move future pension money around in the stock market.

Nice job....same goes for Teacher's [at least older ones] Great benefits, actually super BUT awful payscale. That's why they can't attract young, energetic, smart educators anymore.
