I'm watching a youtube video for a Topps Museum Collection case break. Has anyone ever taken part in one of these? I see the bid for slots on ebay and think I understand it. If you have done this did you get anything out of it?

I've done a few. It's a crapshoot. Know how much is in the break ahead of time. (Full case, half case, one box, whatever). Some of the super premium stuff, they may only open enough to amount to six total cards. Some dont mail the base cards, only the "hits". Some will send you something if you strike out, others won't. Usually the auction description will include the sell sheet info, so you can calculate how many cards are in a case. I avoid any break where total cards are less than total number of teams in the league. That's a sucker bet. And now that Admin added the new product/team functionality, you can see all the cards of any one team across the whole product, base + parallels + inserts, in one view to get an idea of the possibilities.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I am reading the descriptions very carefully. I am looking at a break happening today for Topps Tier 1 and looking at the posted youtube videos from previous breaks. I think I may take a shot.

Well, good luck with it. Let us know how it turns out!

I think Switzr1 hit the nail on the head - read the eBay descriptions carefully and do a bit of research on the product to make sure your comfortable with the risk. I have done about a dozen or so breaks on eBay over the past year plus. I am looking to collect different Brewers cards than score a huge valuable "hit" (although I would love to "hit" one of the big Yount ones!). So, for me it was more important that the break shipped "ALL" cards vs. just say "Hits" or "inserts". Is what they are breaking a blaster box, hobby box, jumbo, etc as this may change slightly would be inside. I have noticed recently on eBay some are now offering a refund of the shipping cost if you do not get any cards, which is a bit of a nice perk - still a loss of the bid cash, but...
I would also make sure the team I was looking for was in that actual product. I have seen a couple where there were no Brewers part of that product or at least listed as a part of the set, but they were part of the break as a team to purchase. Using this site to see how many cards might be available from the product or a site like breakninja.com will give you a good idea as to odds in getting a card, which possible cards available and how many cards from your team are available for the product. From there, one can gauge if worth the costs to risk money on unknown results.
Success rate? Of the ones I have done, I have been very happy with results overall. Most have netted virtually all the base cards with duplicates for the team, a handful of inserts and occasional Auto or MEM card. There is only 1 break where I didn't end up with a single Brewers card - I did end up winning a MEM card SN36 at the end due to random raffle of one card which didn't have a MLB team on it so it was randomly awarded at the end - it was one of the World Baseball Classic cards.
Good Luck!

I've joined three breaks. The first one, run by our own CaptKirk, netted me a Steph Curry autograph and dozens of other cards. The other two I joined- one via Dave & Adam's and one via a Facebook group- netted me 4 cards, total. (2 each). I don't really enjoy it and won't do anymore.
Edit to add: I could have gotten all four cards on COMC for about $8, whereas the two breaks cost me $25 and $30, respectively.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Yeah, there's a definite risk, but that goes for buying any pack of cards actually. I've never spent anything close to the numbers Billy mentioned.

I did a few on vintage breaks and it is like going to the roulette table at Caesar’s...it is fun to do, but you strike out often and if you are trying to build a collection it is a terrible way to do it. If you are looking to get a hit and get it graded it can be fun, but remember you are paying for the entertainment of the break more than the card.

I have used Layton Sports cards. They are visible on youtube and Facebook. As has been mentioned, its a total crap shoot, no better then gambling.
As much as I like Layton, I probalywill NOT do it again. I can buy the cards cheaper then the break usually.
Also keep in mind, if " all cards ship" you could have a ton of base cards of just your team. Now you have to trade them away.
More and more, I like this site, and what I can not trade for, I will fill in the gaps buying. My 1st choice is trading here and moving unwanted cards to a better home.

I did a handful of them a couple years ago as I started getting back into collecting. I suppose they are OK for a team collector but I felt I was really over paying for the cards I got. I don't think I would do one again.
