If you want to persuade someone you better be more specific on what your common cards are. You were very specific in what you wanted in return for them. I would guess it's going to be tough getting a match where someone wants to trade higher valued cards for commons.

I was able to trade a lot for a card or two worth a couple dollars a couple times, I made sure they might have a semi star in the lot and I let them pick cards

Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards

For what you would spend to ship 400 cards you could probably buy either of those cards online.

True, but he's also helping out another collector fill in his/her needs. With that said, I have done that here. Not as lopsoded as hundred's of cards for one of 2, but I have done a few where it was a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio based on what was being sent around.

This is what I think too. If I get back only a handful of cards versus the lot that I trade away, I still get value. I personally like helping out others reach their collecting goals. I frequently propose trades that will be 2:1, 3:1 or even more just to get that Yount card that I have been chasing. To me, my trade list is not helping anyone if it just sits here.

I did a trade, or should i say a super trade in my favor from the Ted Musgrave super collector here. I had a '99 Wheels gold /50 of Ted (about $7 bk) and he gave me a '98 Pinnacle Mint Championship coin of Gordon, 1 of the large ones ($50. bk )
He got what he wanted and i got 1 heck of a deal, and if i have something else he can still use ...
I would like to thank him again
Thanks !!!!

I'm willing to trade a higher dollar card for a batch of cheap cards (that I need). I have done it several times.
I'm willing to trade a batch of cards for one nice card (that I need). I have done it several times also.
If I get cards I need it does not matter what or how many I send out. I have sent out more PIF cards then I have trades.

I'd certainly consider something like that on a case-by-case basis. For example, if I had multiple copies of those rookie cards you mentioned and you had a few hundred cards from a set that I really wanted to build, I might be willing to part with one copy of each of those rookie cards in exchange for the starter set.
