BBM used to do something like that in Japan in the smaller boxed sets they would release. They would issue like 5,000 sets, and 200 jersey cards, 100 glove cards, 50 ball cards and 1200 autographed cards, but to include some sort of insert in every set, they filled out the remaining 3,450 sets, the would use cards, with no serial number, that had just images of the memorabilia pieces. So it looked exactly like the bat, ball or jersey card, but instead of having an actual piece of material, it would just be in image.
I don't think they do it anymore.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster. |

I can see MLB and NYY having a field day of a lawsuit if they so choose. Probably not enough $$ to make it worth their while. Stern ceast and desist
