I try to get a pack of everything, and then pick up more later on of the stuff I liked most. I don't go for sets. I like variety. I would rather have 1 card from 100 different sets than a complete 100 card set.  And I'm not one to say "I collected Donruss last year so I have to collect Donruss this year too".  The exception is the small Topps WWE sets, but even that is growing. Topps did 5 WWE sets in 2016 so I didn't come close to completing any. Don't bog yourself down with too many rules or it could become an obsession rather than a hobby.

I agree with switzr1.  I buy a variety of packs and then collect those I like.  I do really like the Topps Allen & Ginter cards, so I try to collect those.  I am not a big fan of the Prizm cards or the Chrome cards, but I will grab a pack or two sometimes.  I also am limited to pretty much whatever my Fred Meyers have available or the Target on my way home from work.  I do go to a local card shop, but even there, I tend to purchase just the same packs I always get anyway. 

I am more of the mind that Billy is - if it exists and I can get it at a reasonable price, I collect it.  I build sets and collect single player cards of HoF and players that I enjoyed watching play.  But I do not limit myself to any one brand or set.  I often buy large lots of cards that someone is looking to rid themselves of and fill in my sets or start new sets. Usually, I chase the sets that I am close to completing and is a reasonable likeliness that I will be able to, harder than those of which I only have a few cards.  I do like the older cards that concentrated on the subject, i.e. the sport and the player, more than the cards that of the last two decades that thought collectors wanted fancy designs and lots of colors.  It has been often said on this site that collectors prefer cards with a full list of the players stats versus one line of stats.  I wish the companies would go back to producing real baseball cards instead of the glitter cards they do today.

But the nice thing about the hobby, it is to each his / her own as to what he / she collects.
