Spaz, funny, Iinitially went to college to be an astronomer. There is thing though, called physics, and it kinda kicked my butt. But I still love it as you can see from my avatar and follow it as much as I can. Got into meteorolgy when I was stationed in Japan and dealt with typhoons. Everywhere I went I would learn the weather patterns and followed the storms. Even read the NOAA reports of certain storms. But I'll say this, I'm not a Mike Trout-level geek about it going out and tweeting the live action of it....
See, brought sports back into it

I did notice your avatar, but I can't tell what galaxy that is. I pretty much HAD to get interested in meteorology. We constantly deal with severe thunderstorms and occassional hurricanes/tropical storms in NC, so I need to be alert for most of the year (pretty much March thru November for those 2 things). Then that knowledge also helps with sports and astronomy. Can't do either in a thunderstorm!

Geek or Nerd, I really don't see much difference. But maybe that's b/c the only glasses I wear or need to use are sunglasses and binoculars. My binoculars I use for astronomy would make a hunter drool. Unfortunately, they are so heavy that I can't use them for long. I need a tripod for them but that would cost even more than I spent on the binoculars! I've already broke one tripod using them. I got a better tripod for my camera (for filming thunderstorms), but I'm afraid to put my binos on it. If I took those binoculars to a NASCAR race, I'd probably be able to see individual lugnuts hit the ground during pit stops OR if I took them to a football game, I'd be able to read the plays on the QB's wristband.

When Irene hit in '11 I was stationed at Cherry Point, about 20 miles from where it made landfall at Cape Lookout. And I remember Sandy passing by the nexyt year. I was deployed when a couple other went over so worried about the family. After my 5+ years there I moved to Florida so yeah. And, of course, the first time we get a storm that actually impacts where we lived (Irma) we had moved back out of there. So now, instead of tropical storms (though I still follow those up here in CT) I watch for snow.

I remember Irene very well. I know much about Cherry Point too. I have a lot of family in the Hyde and Dare County areas just northeast of there across the Pamlico River. So I am always concerned when weather systems come through that area. The best way to track conditions along the NC coast from Ocracoke Island to the VA border is obxcams.com. I keep it on my PC constantly whenever storms are approaching. They have webcams all over the Outer Banks from Ocracoke up to Duck/Corolla. Some are from fishing piers, some from stores and others from harbors and airports. Nags Head and Hatteras Village have some in town, as does Manteo on Roanoke Island. When I got 8 inches of snow on January 17th of this year, Nags Head got 10 inches!!! It's insane for them to even get one inch of snow EVER, but 10 is almost unbelievable. Ten inches of water rise from super-tides or even more from tropical systems is pretty common, but 10 inches of snow is just stunning!
My sister was in the Navy and eventually stationed at Norfolk, VA. I can't remember if she was there when Irene came through though. I know she came back from Hawaii by then, but she might have gone back to MS for more schooling at Keesler AFB by that time. I know she was in Norfolk when Sandy went by. She was a meteorologist for the Navy ships at that time. She spent a ton of time on the NOAA site forecasting what the ships would encounter. She later tried to explain the NOAA site to me, but that's just a bit more than my understanding of weather can comprehend. At least at this point. I don't have the technical jargon to figure out what I am seeing on the screen. I only get as technical as direction, speed, elevation and pressure.

I'm a nerd too, but not THAT much of one. I love my cards and sports, but my next hobbies are astronomy, meteorology and gardening. Star Trek fits right in with those hobbies. That's pretty nerd-like to me, but I'm still not prancing around a park in an aluminum foil outfit with a fake sword or pretend phasers.

I can understand all understand all that Billy and KCJays.
2 years ago I fell 2 feet from a ladder in work. Had some pain sometimes very bad, recently it caused me to stop trading besides enjoying hobby because I needed bed rest.
When I went to hospital for a look over after fall, I had a back x-ray and a little while later the 2 x-ray girls came back for me to get another x-ray. I asked why, "It not come out right?" no Dr wants chest x-ray done. Had it done and Dr said he forwarding report and x-rays to my DR. I go to doctor and find out that in 1970's when I started working right out of high school in an oil refinery, I got asbestos inside of me and I have scarring on lungs. Small but we need to watch it as it can take over 40 years to be a problem that has to be dealt with. Right now it is very small but we watching it twice a year with x-rays.

Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards
