I was working on my 1994 Fleer Ultra and it took me a bit to find it here. Because the name here is just under, Ultra..?
Now when I look up Ultra baseball cards on the web I find penny sleeve along with some listing that read Fleer Ultra. Even on eBay Fleer Ultra are cards and Ultra is a penny sleeve pack.
Any clue on why the brand name of Fleer is missing for there ultra sets here? Seems odd to drop 1/2 the name. For a set that has Fleer Ultra printed on every card big and bold in gold.
All other sets that I have seen have their complete names here to a fail. Some examples
1991 - Pacific Ryan Texas Express I
or
1992 - The River Group The Elvis Collection
Is this an over-site, did someone make a boo-boo or is there a reason the Fleer name is dropped on this Fleer set?

What is that behind you!?! Oh, It's me! Looking at the cards you have, That I want. :)

When the first set was released in 1991, everyone just called it Ultra. That name stuck b/c there was nothing else out there with that name in cards (Ultra-Pro products are normally not cards) and the sets continued to just be called Ultra in the hobby for over a decade. The same arguments have been made about Stadium Club, Finest, Studio and Collector's Choice/UD Choice to name just a few. I know you haven't been here long, but the Ultra vs. Fleer Ultra discussion comes up about every 6 months.
After Upper Deck got the Fleer naming rights and started making Upper Deck Fleer Ultra sets, I think it was determined that Ultra should stay as the set name whether Fleer actually made them or if Upper Deck made them after Fleer shut down.

I kinda agree with RJ, I would like the full names as well. Unfortunately, the TCDB decision was made and spaz said....stuck.

Spaz is correct. When the cards were first released, Utlra is all it was ever called. SCD, Beckett, and Tuff Stuff always refered to it as Ultra. When COMC first broke from Beckett and built their own catalog, that was the first time I recall anyone calling it Fleer Ultra. Naming it Ultra here, to match how it has been referred to in the collecting community since its inception, makes sense to me.

To me, they were ALWAYS Fleer Ultra. Just like Fleer Brilliants, Fleer Mystique, Fleer Premium, Fleer Maximum, etc. And those are just the Fleer sets.

I'm stayng out of this one, Darrell! I just remembered my "no more arguing on the forums" resolution.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Something I missed mentioning earlier... the word Fleer wasn't part of the logo every year. Some years the logo was just Ultra. Same thing with Stadium Club. Some years the logo was Topps Stadium Club and other years it was just Stadium Club, even if it had a different TSC logo on the back (I think 1994 or 95 is an example of that). Everything I've typed in this thread is straight from my memory with no research needed. I could give so much more info just flipping through an album or two, probably just my Ozzie Smith album.

After editing so many sets this past week where card #s were wrong (missing prefixes, wrong/incomplete prefixes), this is low on my priority list. I agree Fleer Ultra should be used in many instances (and that's where they're always filed in my collection), but it's not worth rocking boats for me. Bigger fish to fry, IMHO.
Topps Allen & Gintner bugs the heck out of me, however. Espically the sets where it doesn't mention Topps on front. We'll all live, however it's categorized or labeled here.
