So a print run of 1,000 means a card or set has 1,000 copies?

Brimose gave a very thorough and correct answer. But to add my somewhat cynical thoughts.....

Print run used to mean a batch of of cards produced at a specific time. For instance, the 1950 Quaker Oats "SGT. Preston of the Yukon" set was produced in two (some argue three) different print runs. The firs print run occurred early in 1950 and sold very well so Quaker Oats ordered up another batch of cards. The printers were turned back on and another "print run" was executed in mid-1950. This is important to this set because a slight variation occured in the copyright line between the first print run and the second print run.

IMHO, modern manufacturers/investment type collectors have turned the term into another marketing tool/gimmick.

Correct, assuming the manufacturer's information is accurate.  I agree with CNagle that it is often used as a gimmick to attempt to enhance scarcity of a product without going through a SN stamping process.

That begs the question...does anyone actually care about PR? I sure don't. And I love sn cards...it's one of my major addictions in the hobby. pr? I don't even include that on my detailed files. 

I pay attention to them in the same way I do SN; that is, figuring out if it is realistic enough to expect getting it for my collection. Otherwise, not so much. 

If the PR isn't printed on the card (like Panini Instant and Topps Now or old Classic cards), then I usually don't care. But there are circumstances where I do care. The most recent example was in 2017 Panini Absolute Racing. All of the Silver versions of AU, RU and AU/RU cards were missing the SN stamps, so the SN effectively became a PR.
