Trying to acquire one card for every for every set, insert, parralle, minor, euro, team issue, oddball etc sets produced for Hockey. Been an interesting project.

I've run across this now too (yes, I'm mainly taking care of minor league baseball):
- Trainers, Mascots, and other staff (and players!) without PIDs in "Verified" sets
- Michael instead of Mike where Mike exists and it should be linked to Mike (Dave/David, Dan/Daniel, etc.)
- PIDs with multiple people of the same name
Please, please, PLEASE, I beg of you to be ultra careful when doing the name validation. It's SO much more than clicking a few buttons to add a name or clicking verify this set to clear it out. That IS NOT the objective of this project. The objective is to get each card correct. Yes, it can be time-consuming. But in the end, when someone new comes to this site, and gets exactly all the cards of Player A, or Person B, they're going to stick around. And I'll say this right now, I'd prefer if you didn't want to handle those, to leave them. Shoot me a message, and I'll personally take care of them. I'd rather take 1 number off the total and clear up 3 player issues than take 100 off the total.
Sorry if I'm sounding rather ranty, but I just want this site to be better today than yesterday, everyday.
Thanks. :)

We have all gotten "ranty" from time to time Dan, like Billy said the other day, that's why there are quite a few of us here that get along so well, we all feel the same way. =)

Yes, that's right, last month we added over 6,000 new PIDs to the database. The highest total so far, and we exceeded the previous high month (Jan 2015) by more than 2,200! (More than a 50% increase!) I'll save you from doing the math - we've added over 57,000 PIDs to the database since the start of 2015.
Keep up the good work. We're trending in the right direction. It is a slow process, checking these names, fixing the typos, etc., but we're getting there. Essentially, we've validated 1,500 sets in about 40 days. The rate we're going, we can be done this by the end of 2017. (We need a Non-Sport expert to step up and help on those!)
Thanks!

Billy - you might not, but I think there are several people on here who would disagree with you. Myself included.

Non-sport is kind of a gray area for me. I don't know if a set of flags just gets marked as complete because there aren't any people, or if the flags get PIDs, or what. And with stuff like TV shows (like yesterday's RCOTD from a show I've never seen, Angel??) you would have to look at the scans of each card and identify the characters to validate one of those sets, right?
Gonna throw this one out there, for people adding wrestling checklists...a PID can't begin with a quotation mark. So if you have a checklist with Roddy Piper, please call him Roddy Piper or Rowdy Roddy Piper, but not "Rowdy" Roddy Piper with the quotation marks, even if the card is worded that way. If in doubt, just do a search and see how it is spelled out in the database already. The PIDs aren't set up that way, and can't be set up that way (unless something has changed since I fixed all of these a couple years ago). Regardless, unless it's a newcomer, the guy is probably already in there so check how he is spelled out and please use that spelling. It gets tricky with Randy Savage, Randy Macho Man Savage, Macho Man Randy Savage, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, and "Macho Man" Randy Savage all being used, and only one Alias is allowed per PID.
Thank you.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Thanks Dan, I appreciate it!
My take: only people or well-established individual animals should get PIDs. (like, say, Secretariat or Krypto) No places, no animal species, no flowers, etc. Obviously not everyone agrees with me as PIDs have been created for all those things I mention that I don't think should get them.
Working on creating PIDs for people is hard work, actually. In volume it's staggering and in effort involved it's far higher than sports. I just did a set of actresses from the 1930s, a 200 (ish) card set, only about 5 of the cards had PIDs beforehand. It took me over an hour just to do that one set.
The military cards are even more work, as the PIDs are created by name, but every time you have a Lt., Gen. etc rank included it means they don't connect so I have to either manually tag them to their PID or manually type their name if they don't have one yet. I made a little chart for myself with the most common PIDs of famous WWII people- FDR, MacArthur, Churchill and so forth, just to have easy reference so I don't have to go look them up every time I come across them in a set.
It's fun work but with 6800+ sets ahead of me it's going to take some time.
Doing this is also helping me. It's led me to discover a few sets I didn't know existed, and it was the first time I had really expored some sets' checklists. I just did Goudy Sky Birds, I had no idea that many of the famous flyers (on both sides!) got cards. So far it appears to be the only cards ever issued for some of the legendary names of the air war of WWI like Immelman, Fonck, etc. I believe it may be the oldest American issued card of Baron von Richtofhen, the Red Baron, although with early non-sports cards it's always hard to say for sure what's out there, at least for me; it seems like I locate a new set every time I take the time to look.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.
