A total lunar eclipse is happening tonight and here are the specifics. Penumbral eclipse (meaning the moon starts to darken/change colors) begins @ 9:37 EST. Partial eclipse begins (as it enters the darkest part of Earth's shadow) @ 10:34 EST. Total eclipse (entire moon in total shadow) begins @ 11:41 EST and ends at 12:43am EST on 1/21. The Umbral eclipse ends @ 1:51am EST 1/21 and penumbral ends @ 2:48am EST.
The next total lunar eclipse visible in the Americas isn't until May of 2021, but it's not expected to be as good with timing and proximity.
I've already taken my "before picture" of the moon.

Yes, I am all over this. It's a clear cold night and our view should be perfect.

YW, Mark. I was hoping the thread would remind some and notify others.
V3, it's pretty clear here and also very cold. I noticed some thin clouds to the north but they should stay away from the moon. I'm just glad the wind has been slowing down throughout the day! Temperature has been below freezing for a couple of hours and wind chill was below freezing by midday. But the windchill is now moving towards the temperature, so that helps.
The main issue for me is this very exciting AFC Championship Game! I don't want to step away for even a second, but at least I can pause the TV. Doing that now as I head out to look at the moon again!

Clear skies here, and the game just ended. But the moon doesn't look red. Seems very bright though. Too early maybe?

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Yes, too early. It's just starting to dim on the southeast edge of the moon, or 6 to 9 on a clock dial.

Thank you so much for not ruining the game for me! I had it paused a few times. I just saw the finish! 2 fantastic conference championship games today and the 1st time the NFL has ever had 2 playoff games go to overtime on the same day. SB-LIII should be a really good one. I can't wait to see the battle in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the heads up! Earlier, my wife said something about a blood moon tonight. I don't know why that came up, but there wasn't any mention of an actual eclipse.

Well, this just didn't live up to expectations. I stood out there, on and off, from 11:38 to 11:58, and there was a tinge of orange, but not the blood red moon they showed on the internet. Still pretty cool. And I didn't have to look at it through a hole in a piece of cardboard, so that's a plus.
