It’s funny what you remember.  I was born in 78, so I don’t remember watching him, but I started collecting in 1986 and I always remembered his 86 Topps cars for some reason.  I think it was because reading the back, he played for the Colt 45’s and I used to wonder what the Colt 45’s were.  That card with him for the Mets with the bat on his shoulder is one of those cards that for some reason I always have remembered through all these years.  RIP Rusty.

That is exactly where I think Panini misses the boat on card backs. I love seeing all the year by year stats and now defunct teams or seeing how somebody who is a old bench guy now was maybe an all star a decade or so ago.

And now Topps has started doing the same thing.

That’s a really good point about the backs.  Honestly, I never watched George Foster play and would barely know who he was if I didn’t have his 86 Topps card and saw he had over 50 homers in a season.  The stats are one th Not that really magnetized me to collecting.  If I was a younger kid and just got my first packs, I’m not sure re is have been as drawn in.  I used to scour the backs to see how long players played, if they ever the the league in a major stat and who they played for.  That is now gone.  I really hope one of these companies throws them back on.  I can’t imagine the reason they wouldn’t.

And of course, Rest In Peace, Rusty.  I was a little thrown off when I saw the 10 on the Mets mound today, then discovered he had just died this morning.
