The current checklists for the Barry Colla 8x10 sets are not in good shape. Here are the current sets listed on here:
I don't think it is too useful to look at the existing pages for guidance on how this should be organized, but that is what is there so far. Here is the info I have gathered so far:
- Photos were released in packs of 4 or 5. Some of them were team sets, while others were themed like All-Stars, Rookies, or Superstars.
- I've found photos with copyrights ranging from 1988-1991.
- Some photos have a large, bold number on the back upper right corner. This seems to correspond to a specific release. For example, the Dave Winfield and Ozzie Smith with the 700-04 number correspond to the Superstars pack #4 of 6, labelled as 70004 on the outside wrapper.
- All photos have a smaller 3 to 4 digit number in the back upper right corner that uniquely identifies the photo. The last two digits match the copyright date of the photo. For example, the Ozzie Smith #7689 has a copyright date of 1989.
- I've found evidence of one image that shows up in two different packages - a Gregg Jefferies in the 90003 Hot Rookies pack and the 70005 Superstars pack. I'm not sure if the numbering on the back is different to reflect the different sets.
- Another point to note from from correspondence with user Solson7859, he said he purchased a set with 1989 copyrights on the back that were adverstised in the listing as 1990. When he reached out to the seller (Larry Fritsch), they said that these were considered 1990 set and not 1989. This seems like it would make figuring out the years for these sets super confusing if not going by the copyright date.
Given all of this, how should the checklists for these sets be organized?
- Since it seems like the copyright year is part of the unique number for cards, does each year constitue a single set even though they were released in separate packages?
- Do the series of packages consistute different sets (so the Superstars packs 1-6 would be one set, team sets would each be their own set), even though the numbering scheme seems to run through all of these? This seems like what has been attempted with the three existing checklists.
I've compiled the information I've been able to find on individual photos (first sheet) as well as packaging details (second sheet) here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EsV7lnYD2mstYjbcyZuhDx4X61ZM4ZQPppZFphGcit0/edit?usp=sharing
I have mostly used eBay to compile the info that I have. If anyone has a better source or more info that could be added to the spreadsheet let me know.
Thanks for any help with this effort!

The key to this is going to be the Jefferies. If it was the same exact card issued in multiple packs, then the best way to list these would be by year. If they were different, then by set type (All-Stars, Team, etc.). Figure that one out, and then post here again.

I went ahead and purchased the 70005 Superstars pack to get the answer on the Jefferies as I can't find any online showing a back matching the packaging. I'll update here after I receive it!

To update on the Jefferies in the 70005 pack - the small number "989" is identical to the photo in the 90003 pack, however the big number is different and matches the packaging ("700-05" as opposed to "900-03").
Since the small number appears to be the checklist number, does that point to having all photos in the same year listed in the same set, with examples like these being variations?
One point to note is that not all photos have a "big number" that corresponds to the packaging. Not sure if that makes a difference on what to do here.

Sounds like the sets should be listed individually as they were issued.

Thanks, and what about sets like "Rookies" or Superstars" that indicate on the packaging its number in the series like "1 of 2" etc., do you think those should be grouped together in one set? Or each pack should be considered its own set regardless?

We whould treat those as series (if they were released inthe same year) and combine them. (If they were not in the same year, keep them separate.)

Thanks, I'll go with that then. So far I haven't been able to get complete data to actually submit any checklists. Here are my thoughts and some info on the different sets.
1989 Barry Colla 8x10 Hot Rookies - Pack 1 players are already posted in the existing checklist - https://www.tcdb.com/Checklist.cfm/sid/121618/1989-Barry-Colla-8x10-Rookies?PageIndex=1#8266323. However I can't find info on pack 2. Checklist probably needs to be shortened down to 8 rather than 12.
1989 Barry Colla 8x10 Superstars - I have all the players in the packs but I don't have all the numbers yet. I'll keep the spreadsheet I made above public but I'll paste what I've compiled below for reference. These don't have an existing checklist on TCDB.

1989 Barry Colla 8x10 All-Stars - I haven't been able to find anything labeled as 1989 All-Star pack. I think the existing checklist is just a mash-up of photos from various packs.
1990 Barry Colla 8x10 All-Stars - I've found an AL All-Stars pack and NL All-Stars pack, they are advertised as 1990 on eBay but I don't know the copyright year on the photos. The existing checklist here seems to have the right players but also with Howard Johnson thrown in there too. I'm thinking this should really be two separate sets given there does not seem to be any reference to multiple packs in the packaging. I would then suggest the year be based on the copyright year once that is determined.

Various team sets - These would end up each being their own set. Solson7859 has the Yankees set so I will ask him for the numbering information and get that set created at least so we have a precedent.
If anyone happens to come across this and has a collection of opened photos where we can get the numbers on the back, that would be helpful info to share!

I see the 1989 Superstars set 70001 on ebay with back photos.
Strawberry 3389
Puckett 389
Mattingly 8489
Canseco 289
Hopefully this is useful.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Thank you! I've added them to my spreadsheet. If you have the link, that would be great so I can add descriptions of the photos to my notes.
