Patches!by Billy Kingsley - 103 cards (Last updated on Feb 25, 2020) |
There is something special about pulling a patch card. When they started doing relics in 1996 they didn't do patches, and when they started introducing patch cards, they didn't make a big deal about it...if you got one, that was great, but it was just considered a jersey card. That didn't last long, and they soon became the de facto parallel for relics.
For the NBA, patches come from the player's name, the team logo, the number, or the tag. (But NOT the borders around the arm or neck holes) For NASCAR it comes from the sponsor patches or the driver's name. I've got quite a few patches, so I thought I would share them in a List.
41. 2003-04 Hoops Hot Prospects #101 Brian Cook
I bought this one as a single. Unfortunately whoever owned it before I did mistreated it, and there is damage in the bottom left corner of both the patch and autograph openings. (Pretty sure pointing that out saved me some money though!) |
42. 2001-02 Fleer Shoebox - Sole of the Game Triple #NNO Vince Carter
I received this one as a replacement from Fleer when they could not provide a redemption I had sent them. I don't remember which card I had sent them- I want to say it was for one of the We're No.1 inserts from 2001-02 Marquee, but I can't be sure any more. So...after calling Fleer on the telephone, I ended up getting this one, and a Larry Bird auto/jersey numbered 100/100. I think I did pretty well with the replacement. I remember that I didn't know what they were going to send and being surprised when the package arrived. Unfortunately Fleer still owed me three redemptions when they went out of business. I know I'll never get them. |
43. 2011 Press Pass Fanfare - Magnificent Materials #MM-KUB Kurt Busch
Bought on a Facebook group at a slightly deflated price from when he was falsely accused of domestic violence. I jumped when the prices were lowered, which didn't last long as he was cleared within about 2 weeks. It was not the only one of his cards I got in that time. |
44. 2012 Press Pass Showcase - Masterpieces Memorabilia Gold #MP-TB Trevor Bayne
My favorite NASCAR patch. I got this on Ebay for under $15, which I am still amazed at! |
45. 2014 Press Pass American Thunder - Brothers In Arms Relics Blue #BAM-CGR Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates
Purchased on a Facebook group. |
46. 2006-07 UD Black - Patches Autographs 10 #AP-PD Paul Davis
Purchased on a Facebook group. Even though it's SN10 I paid less than what it's SN to, which is pretty amazing when you think about it...even when it is a player who didn't "make it" in the NBA. |
47. 2014 Press Pass Total Memorabilia - Total Memorabilia - Blue Triple #TM-AA Aric Almirola
This one came from the same person who sold me the Kurt Busch and Ganassi Racing cards above. |
48. 2013 Press Pass Redline - Dark Horse Relic Autographs Red #DH-MA Marcos Ambrose
Pulled from a DA Card World Hit Parade |
49. 2002-03 Fleer Hot Shots - Give and Go Game-Used #125 Tony Parker / David Robinson
Pulled by me from a pack when the set was new. This is taken from the bottom of the spur that makes up the U on the front of the jersey. |

Impressive collection there Billy. Did you pull many of those from packs?

Hi Switzr, I just saw your comment now. I would say that roughly 75% to 80% of these were indeed pulled by me. I also purchased some as singles, traded for one or two and even won one of them as a giveaway! I usually am making note of where I got them, but sometimes I don't actually remember. I was bringing in over 1000 new cards a month during the peak of my collecting in 2002-04, when most of these were added to my collection, and I just don't remember on many of them.

I like that Gasol game worn jersey patch, good pick-up there.

I go for the 'PRIME' patches myself...just because they are more colorful!

Great collection of memorabilia - nice variety - gotta love those monochrome "patches" :) That Shaquille O'Neal patch looks like it hits "right between the numbers", as in the 3 & 4. Turned sideways, the two-color piece is part of the 3's upper curve & the small piece is the 4's left-most point.
Just saw the comments I got years ago...major facepalm on my part! Thank you all Joey, Ray and SaintOrm! You might be right on the Shaq, certainly better than I've come up with.
I think hockey cards have the best patches.
That Gretzky is SWEET! | ||
Thanks! I'm still kind of amazed that I was able to pull that one. Certainly my best so far. |
