The Underrated Baseball Rookie Card List

by Joeyd011 - 286 cards (Last updated on Feb 6, 2020)

231. 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition #17F Jim Thome

Jim Thome - HOF Career, 2,328 Hits, 451 Doubles, 612 HR's, 1,699 RBI's, 276 Career Hitter, 5 Time All-Star.

Thome was a dominant designated hitter, very similar to Big Frank in terms of sheer power at the plate. Thome was recently inducted into the hall of fame on the first ballot.

232. 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition #24F Kenny Lofton

Kenny Lofton - 2,428 Hits, 383 Doubles, 130 HR's, 781 RBI's, 622 SB's, 4 Gold Gloves as Outfielder, .299 Career Hitter, 6 Time All-Star.

I would consider Lofton to be the best lead off hitter of his era. He had all the tools that an elite player could possibly have as a lead off man, as well as being an exceptional outfielder. I don't believe he receives the proper recognition that he deserves.

233. 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition #8F Ryan Klesko

Ryan Klesko - 1,564 Hits, 343 Doubles, 278 HR's, 987 RBI's, .279 Career Hitter, 1 WS Ring.

234. 1992 Bowman #11 Trevor Hoffman

Trevor Hoffman - HOF Career, 601 Saves, 2nd All-Time, 1,133 SO's, 2.87 Career ERA, 7 Time All-Star.

Hoffman is second in saves all-time, but he holds the current record for most strikeouts per innings pitched by a reliever in major league history. He was recently inducted into the hall of fame in 2018, his third year on the ballot.

235. 1992 Bowman #127 Carlos Delgado

Carlos Delgado - 2,038 Hits, 483 Doubles, 473 HR's, 1,512 RBI's, 9 100+ RBI Season, .280 Career Hitter, 2 Time All-Star.

236. 1992 Bowman #298 Garret Anderson

Garret Anderson - 2,529 Hits, 522 Doubles, 287 HR's, 1,365 RBI's, .293 Career Hitter, 3 Time All-Star, 1 WS Ring.

Another great '92 Bowman rookie card in Garret Anderson, but these rookies dressed in casual clothing look like they belong in an early 90's J.C. Penney ad.

237. 1992 Fleer Update #U-104 Jeff Kent

Jeff Kent - 2000 NL MVP, 2,461 Hits, 560 Doubles, 377 HR's, 1,518 RBI's, 8 100+ RBI Seasons, .290 Career Hitter, 5 Time All-Star.

238. 1992 Leaf - Gold Rookies #BC-3 Pedro Martinez

Pedro Martinez - HOF Career, 1997 NL CY Young Award, 1999, and 2000 AL CY Young Awards, 219 Wins, 3,154 SO's, 2 300+ Strikeout Seasons, 2.93 Career ERA, .687 Career Winning Percentage, 5 Time ERA Leader within the NL and AL, Triple Crown Award, 8 Time All-Star, 1 WS Ring.

Martinez is now enshrined into the hall of fame, very dominant throughout his career and well deserved.

239. 1992 Topps Traded #39T Nomar Garciaparra

Nomar Garciaparra - 1997 AL ROY, 1999 and 2000 AL Batting Titles, 1,747 Hits, 370 Doubles, 229 HR's, 936 RBI's, .313 Career Hitter, 6 Time All-Star.

Nomar was a really great player, but he was injured nearly every season of his career unfortunately.

240. 1992 Topps Traded #123T Jason Varitek

Jason Varitek - 1,307 Hits, 306 Doubles, 193 HR's, 757 RBI's, .256 Career Hitter, 1 Gold Glove, 3 Time All-Star, 2 WS Rings, Career Boston Red Sox.

I swear I've commented on this excellent list in the past. Perhaps I'm confusing it with another. Anyway...outstanding work. I love a lot of your choices -- not sure how "underrated" the cards or players are in some cases, but great list, nonetheless.

Thanks Vvvergeer.  Yes, you have definitely commented and made suggestions to this list in the past.  I believe Rick Reuschel was one of them.  Over the years I have made additions, used suggestions, and revamped the list overall.  Part of the revamp work was cleaning up the statistical information, and doing some updating regarding the many little fun facts and/or thoughts on certain players.  It has been a while since I've updated the list with new additions, and the previous comments made were from a few years ago (time flies)....so, I decided to continue with a fresh comment section.  Thanks again for revisiting the list.

Cool list Joey. I want to go after some of these cards, especially some from the 70s. I would point out that Bernie Williams was ALCS MVP, not AL MVP, in 1996.

Thanks for revisiting this list Switzr1.  I corrected the Bernie Williams error, and will be adding more cards soon.

How can you leave out the '88 Score Rookie/Traded & '88 Score Rookie/Traded Glossy of Roberto Alomar? They both sell for peanuts considering the print run. Best overall 2nd baseman of all time (offense and defense). Most Gold Gloves of any 2nd baseman in history. Would have reached 3,000 hits if he'd have had better seasons offensively during his 2 years in New York. But he faded fast after 2003. His mind was no longer in the game and he was ready to move on.

That Young one is certainly interesting. Say, is Willians Astudillo eligible for this list yet, or too early in his career?

DarkSide830, thanks for checking out this list.  This particular list consists primarily of retired players, or players near the tail end of their career.  An active player 'underrated rookie card' list is something that I have thought about doing, but haven't quite got around to it.  It's a great idea that would definitely generate a whole lot of opinions, and constantly evolve I'm sure.  But if you have any recommendations for this list that you can think of, I'd be glad to see what they are.
