1969 Topps #61 Jimmie Hall Front

11. 1969 Topps #61 Jimmie Hall

Jimmie Hall

(31 yr. old Outfielder) 11 games

Jimmie's 33 home run rookie season with the Twins in 1963 still stands as the AL record for a 1st year player. Jimmie was a September addition in 1969, playing in only 11 games for the Cubs. After baseball, Jimmie was a woodworker and long haul trucker. He remained elusive to autograph seekers until finally agreeing to a couple private signings in 2013 and 2014.

1969 Topps #115 Bill Hands Front

12. 1969 Topps #115 Bill Hands

Bill Hands

"Froggy" d.17 (29 yr. old starting Pitcher) 41 games

Bill Hands and Randy Hundley came to the Cubs from the Giants in one of the Cubs best trades ever, the 1st with Durocher as manager. Bill was the number 3 starter in the Cubs rotation in 1969, winning 20 games that year. After baseball Bill owned a gas station in Orient, NY. Bill was an obliging signer by mail. I met him on a number of occasions and had many items signed through the mail. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 76.

1970 Topps #541 Bill Heath Front

13. 1970 Topps #541 Bill Heath

Bill Heath

(30 yr. old Catcher) 27 games

Bill never played a full season in the majors. He caught Ken Holtzman's 1969 no-hitter through 8 innings before breaking a finger off a foul ball. He never played again. He was struck by tragedy in 1975 when his ex-wife and daughter were murdered during a home invasion. Bill went into financial planning and founded Barrington Financial Advisors in Houston, TX in 1972. I've met Bill on a few occasions and sent some things for him to sign.

I have 3 of 3 Topps cards autographed. (7 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #63 Jim Hickman Front

14. 1969 Topps #63 Jim Hickman

Jim Hickman

"Gentleman Jim" d.16 (32 yr. old Outfielder) 134 gms

Jim's rookie card is the last card in the '62 Topps set, making it hard to find and expensive to acquire to have him sign. Jim was an original Met and the first one to hit for the cycle. He was the Cubs starting right fielder in 1969. His best year was 1970 when he was the NL Comeback Player of the Year. Jim's RBI single in the 12th inning of the '70 All-Star game scored Pete Rose who ran into Ray Fosse at home plate, separating his shoulder. I met Jim at public signings a few times before his passing in 2016.

I have 11 of 11 Topps cards autographed. (35 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #288 Ken Holtzman Front

15. 1969 Topps #288 Ken Holtzman

Ken Holtzman

(23 yr. old starting Pitcher) 39 games

Ken was the Cubs number 2 starter in '69. On August 19, 1969 he no-hit the Atlanta Braves. Later traded to the Oakland A's, he was a major contributor to their World Series championships in '72, '73 and '74. He finished his career with 174 wins making him the winningest Jewish pitcher with 9 more than Sandy Koufax. Ken was always a tough autograph and most of his signings were private signings. I got to meet Ken at a public signing in 2015.

I have 15 of 17 Topps cards autographed. (55 total signed cards)
Need 1972-670; 1975mini-145

1969 Topps #347 Randy Hundley Front

16. 1969 Topps #347 Randy Hundley

Randy Hundley

"Rebel" (27 yr. old All-Star Catcher) 151 games

Randy was a superb defensive catcher who developed the one-handed catching technique. In '66 he hit for the cycle. Considered a team leader, he was an All-Star in 1969 and was the first player to catch 150 games in 3 consecutive seasons ('67-'69). The Rebel originated the idea of baseball fantasy camps and has run them for years. A fan favorite, I've had the pleasure of meeting Randy many times at Cubs Conventions. He always returns your signed item with a southern drawl "yer welcome" .

I have 12 of 12 Topps cards autographed. (27 total signed cards)

1969 Topps #640 Fergie Jenkins Front

17. 1969 Topps #640 Fergie Jenkins

Fergie Jenkins • HOF

(26 yr. old starting Pitcher) 43 games

Fergie is the 1st Canadian born player in the Hall of Fame. He played basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters in the off season from 1967-69. He was the Cubs ace in 1969 and won 20 or more games in a row from 1967-72 winning the Cy Young in 1971. I've met Fergie on many occasions. He is an annual guest at Cubs conventions where he signs for his charity the Fergie Jenkins Foundation for a small donation.

I have 33 of 36 Topps cards autographed. (62 total signed cards)
Need 1970-69; 1971-72; 1975mini-310

1969 Topps #10 National League 1968 Pitching Leaders (Juan Marichal / Bob Gibson / Fergie Jenkins) Front

18. 1969 Topps #10 National League 1968 Pitching Leaders (Juan Marichal / Bob Gibson / Fergie Jenkins)

I'm a big fan of Topps yearly leader cards. Fergie appears here with two fellow baseball Hall of Famers. This card was signed for me by Fergie at the annual Cubs Convention at the Chicago Hilton and Towers in 2004.

1969 Topps #12 National League 1968 Strikeout Leaders (Bob Gibson / Fergie Jenkins / Bill Singer) Front

19. 1969 Topps #12 National League 1968 Strikeout Leaders (Bob Gibson / Fergie Jenkins / Bill Singer)

This leader card is shared with Bob Gibson, a fellow member of the 3000 strikeout club. Fergie is one of only four pitchers to have over 3,000 strikeouts and under 1,000 walks. Greg Maddux, Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez are the other three.

1968 Topps #538 Manny Jimenez Front

20. 1968 Topps #538 Manny Jimenez

Manny Jimenez

d.17 (30 yr. old Pinch Hitter) 6 games

Manny appeared in only 6 games as a pinch hitter for the Cubs in 1969. His rookie card is the last card from the 1962 Topps set making it the second copy of that card I needed to have signed along with Jim Hickman. Manny spent much of his time in the Dominican Republic making finding his signed cards difficult at best. His autograph is the least legible of any of the players on the Cubs roster. He passed away in December of 2017.

I have 6 of 6 Topps cards autographed. (9 total signed cards)

Thanks Billy. I think you'd enjoy all the details I've catalogued involving my autograph collections. Each autographed item includes the date of acquisition, the source and the cost. I too wrote everything down by hand on paper. It all needs to be transferred to an Excel (or Access) doc so I can have better access to the info. I wish I'd kept better records with regards to the costs involved in acquiring the item prior to it being signed. For example, my 1962 Topps signed Jim Hickman only details the cost of acquiring the autograph, but the card itself was probably $40 before it was signed because it's the last card in the set.
