UNR / Reno area players

by Hittinaway - 42 cards (Last updated on Feb 17, 2024)

11. 2005 Upper Deck USA Baseball 2004 National Team - 2004 Team USA Signatures Black #S-22 Brett Hayes

Brett played at UNR from 2003-05 and won several Freshman of the Year awards. He was drafted by the Marlins and played in the majors from 2009-2014. He was inducted into Nevada's Hall of Fame in 2017.

12. 2005 Bowman - Autographs #145 Nate Schierholtz

Nate didn't play for Nevada but was born in Reno where I'm from. His MLB career started in 2007 and ended in 2014. He was part of the 2010 World Series champions with the Giants. He also won a bronze metal in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

13. 2006 Topps #323 Darrell Rasner

Darrell played at UNR from 2000-02 and was drafted by the Expos. He debuted in 2005 and career in the majors ended in 2008. After the majors he played for the Japanese Rakuten Golden Eagles for 5 seasons and won a championship there. He is currently a scout for the Golden Eagles. Fun fact that in high school, I faced Rasner in the varsity playoffs and was walked.

2017 Topps Heritage #384 Diamondbacks 2017 Rookie Stars (Braden Shipley / Matt Koch) Front

14. 2017 Topps Heritage #384 Diamondbacks 2017 Rookie Stars (Braden Shipley / Matt Koch)

Drafted as the overall 15th to the Diamondbacks and the highest selected athlete in the history of UNR. As of 2022 he is playing in the minors and hope he can make it back to the majors.

15. 1983-84 Star #245 Edgar Jones

Played 1975–79 and one of the first Nevada players to get drafted (along with Johnny High, which I don't have a card of as of yet). He set the All-Time score record at UNR until Nick Fazekas broke it in 2006. He was also the first basketball player to have his number retired (32) at the school. Interesting photo used for his first NBA card though.

16. 1991-92 Upper Deck #298 David Wood

Played at UNR from 1985-87. He won a Bronze metal in the 1998 FIBA World Championship playing on US National Team.

17. 2004 Press Pass - Autographs Silver #30 Kirk Snyder

Played 2001–2004 and one of the first UNR players to be drafted since David Wood in 1987. Kirk's career was only for a few years and had a rocky personal life where he was arrested and convicted for assault. After being released he played in Canada. I like the style of this card and sporting the Nevada jersey.

18. 2004-05 Fleer Genuine - Big Time Autographs Patches #BTAJ/KS Kirk Snyder

Not a big fan of the photo but the patch and signature came out well and wanted to add it here.

2007-08 Fleer Hot Prospects #107 Nick Fazekas Front

19. 2007-08 Fleer Hot Prospects #107 Nick Fazekas

Nick played from 2003–2007 and set many Nevada and league (WAC) records. Although his NBA career was brief he is playing very well in the Japanese Professional league, where he has helped the Kawasaki Brave Thunders win 2 championships. Nick was also voted MVP in 2018. He is now a Japanese citizen. This is my favorite patch card as another copy I have has 2 colors.

20. 2007-08 SP Authentic #139 Nick Fazekas

Colors of his patch are much better and brighter in person but also a great card. Nevada recently retired Nick's number (22) and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2017.

Unfortunately, the *-reference.com doesn't cover CFL guys, but there are cards available of guys like Lucuis Floyd, Shar Pourdanesh and Chris Vargas available. And Fajardo is having a great season with the Riders, having become the starter after an injury and has lead them to the Western Division lead. Still no CFL cards for him, though.

I like that Babbitt and Johnson went on to play together professionally. I'm not really familiar with them, but it's a cool story and experience for them.

C2Cigars

Bob Hamm, #90 Houston Oilers, 1983-1984, never received his own NFL card.  But he made a cameo appearance on Eric Dickerson's 1985 Topps Record Breaker card.

Good find C2Cigars! I never would have found that! I wonder how many players who don't have cards are lost in the background.
