I know this is about baseball and not hockey, but there was one time that I tried some very old gum that was in an old pack of hockey cards I got. Now I don't remember the set it was but that gum was the worst tasting gum I've ever tried. Never again will I try extremely old gum. (that and the fact that I haven't gotten another old pack of hockey cards with gum in it) =)

I'm interested in how the grinder worked

I tried the gum from a pack of 1989 Fleer (I think). I don't remeber any taste, but it was kind of like biting a piece of hard plastic that broke into many tiny hard pieces - like chewing on grit. I spit it all out and didn't swallow anything so I can't say what effects it may have had on my digestive system. My son thought I was a weirdo (still does actually)

A gun would probably get the gum off...not sure how the card would fare afterwords though! 

I've got a few cards with gum damage. I don't think it's fixable. Putting that kind of stuff in cards was such a bad idea. Luckily the 70s and 80s cards are not really rare so I have reasonable hope to replace them. Already did replace one from 90-91 Topps hockey.

In 1992 I tried to chew some gum from 1989. I probably still have scars on the inside of my mouth. Nowadays it crumbles, back then it was so sharp that you could cut glass with it. 

I actually keep an unbroken example as part of my card collection. It's in a penny sleeve that I taped shut. 

Yeah, gum/wax stains are a b*tch, but like Billy said, you'll probably find another one that is undamaged.

which were packaged in their own separate cellophane package as to not damage the cards etc. in the packs, but there is no way I'm breaking out my extras to taste/chew them.

Wax can be removed from the front of cards, good luck with the back.   Gum is nearly impossible to remove.   I tried some 1967 Topps gum in 1986.  It was saved along with the cards.   Basically it crumbled in my mouth, like gypsum.   Spit it out immediately.   Obviously, I did not die.....I think.

Alright, this has been a really long forum thread.  And I admit I'm a bit tired and may not remember all the facts completely straight.  But  in either case I cannot believe that I have to say this:

You should NOT use a grinder to remove 37 year old gum from a 4 year old.  That is completely inappropriate and dangerous to the 4 year old.

Now if I have that backwards, you also should not use a grinder to remove 4 year old gum from a 37 year old.  But at least here you have a shot at it working out okay if you plan ahead. 

Maybe just make sure no onions or hot peppers or something, if you have a choice.  Now if your only choices are a grinder or like a Philly Cheesesteak or maybe a jalapeno bagel or something, then give the grinder a try, I guess.

But I still think a grinder with a 4 year old's yet undeveloped digestive system is just asking for trouble.

Not that it needs to be said (again), but do not eat the gum.  I have opened old packs containing gum which had started to grow mold, due to moisture interacting with the sugars and/or cardboard.  Not good for the cards (I threw the whole pack out) & not good for human consumption.

I agree, gum stains are a bitch....impossible!

Meanwhile, I have gum in my collection, crazy huh? Actually labeled gum like ProSet, Power Rangers and the like. Does anybody want some?
