I actually have a cd Card Collector program up for auction on eBay. Hardly ever used with the hobby moving so fast at the time. It's probably a dinosaur by now. Somebody will bid, just the eBay way ! ~BOB~

I know several members have asked to export their information to excel or something. I just asked Admin to add it to the New Feature Tracker. If it is added and it gets enough votes, it might happen someday.

Redsfan, Another great feature to add ! How much time would that save for members backing up their collection here with a SS.
Now, I have another SS question. Please follow, when you open the browse feature and select a main category, all the years appear. Clicking a year brings up all the sets produced [and entered in the TCDB for that year.] Near the Top of that page are the various subcategories that these cards were listed in. THE QUESTION? I have no problem copy/pasting each main category "Baseball for instance" of all my Baseball Cards, IS THERE ANY WAY TO FURTHER BREAK THEM DOWN into the subcategaries to further define the SS?

Well, I started the long and tedious personal SS construction for all 4 rooms of cards. I'm not going to bore you with all the details, but many are picking up tips here and there from these posts, so I'll toss a bit of info.
All the information I need is: 1. complete set, partial set, handful of cards 2. location number in the rooms, 3. a color code to help with the location, 4. where I store the dupes and 6. any note that might help.. 5 columns in all.
I copy/pasted every set of my cards into excel, different sports etc to a sheet, in each sheet I fiddled with the columns, and named the sheet.
My Excel mentor suggested a sliding checkmark [that's neat], color coding the boxes [cells] and when I get a little better other Excel features i didn't know about but could be very helpful in the future.
Finally, I drew each storage unit [ex bookcase] with excel and cross referenced it with my SS. Now it will be easy to find stuff with my SS/Diagrams. I'm like totally OCD now!

The sliding checkmark? Is that the same as an "If Then" equation?
i have an "If Then" equation in the need column. Basically if the have column is 0 then the need column is 1. If the have column is 1, then the need column is empty.

Probably simpler than that.. In my spreadsheet, Col. 1 - list of all sets, Col. 2 an inserted checkmark, bold and green and filled. Cols. 3,4,etc Set, Partial, cards etc. whatever. Now I just click the checkmark and move it to whatever column is appropriate. I'm sure there are fancier methods, but this works. As the SS refines, I probably will add more symbols.

Sounds like a grab and drag. Yes that is a lot simpler then writing an equation then testing that equation to make certain it does what you want it to do.
I can not seem to copy and paste a picture of my SS, but I do get rather complex on them. I have a SS for each category of cards I collect, with a new page for every year within that collection. Then I have all 16 of those SS linked to a different SS that keeps track of how many I have have and how many I need within each of the individual SS. It does make it easy on me when I get a new card that I wanted/needed. I go into that SS and year and put a 1 in the have column. Once I do that it takes the card off my missing list.
The good thing I have found is if you go to checklist on a set here you can copy and paste that to a blank page in Excel. Then change that page to however you do your SS. Finally copy and paste the checklist over to the page you want it in Excel.

I use excel for almost every aspect of my life EXCEPT for cards. Lots of travel spreadsheets, cemeteries, postcard collection, locomotives I've spotted, every ball game (except one) that I have attended since 1998. Stats for every baseball and basketball game from that period. Not to mention all the spreadsheets at work. I've done some to analyze my collection in the past, when I didn't keep my collection on here, but no more. This site has me covered.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Just to clarify this post to the post followers:
> I do use TCDB for ALL card collecting data , So every card I own will be [someday] listed in the database: Main Collections, Sub-Collections, User Lists. There is NO way I could keep a SS for ALL the cards [each card] I have.
> My Excel SS is for me to 1] record all sets, partial sets, dupe boxes BUT not individual cards. 2] The SS's primary function is to take me to the > room > then cabinet, bookshelf etc. > then shelf, drawer etc > then set, box etc. and eventually the cards. Of course each box is divided by yr., maker, etc. That's why my SS is relatively simple to construct, add Excel's "bells & whistles" and ta-da I'm good. Also by adding my Excel diagrams, I reinforce my SS. I'm learning to incorporate symbols, colors etc. into the SSs to make it easier to use. This effort is still going to take time, so I'm working on it slowly each day.
LOL, It's kinda like a Treasure map!

These threads about organizing and spreadsheet usage have been very interesting.
It certainly seems that there is basically a different method for each person. :) My way won't work for you, just like your way won't work for me. (And that's directed at everyone who has talked about "their way".)
My way - when I started my collections, things were MUCH simpler. I went after a set (easy enough to track), 1 extra of each Phillies card (easy enough to track, and since I put those in pages, left open spots for the missing cards), and 1 extra of each star (I only sought the Topps, Fleer, Donruss, later Score & UD, cards, inserts were few at that point, and they weren't "essential" to the collections, so again, easy enough to track, also in pages - then - so open spots left for missing cards). I also did not have (or have access to) a computer back in the 1980s.
When my wife and I started doing the hockey thing (and she decided that she wanted to try to get all the Yzerman cards - not too daunting of a task when started in 1996), I turned to technology then. Having a computer, and working in the industry, I decided to use a database and a report writer to create customized printouts that we were able to put into a 1/2" binder to take to shops and shows. (I also finally got smart and threw in a handful of pages so we could easily carry purchases.) I since converted the databases over to Access tables, and still refer to them time to time (usually only as questions about that era pop up on here).
I still don't have most of the collections logged here. I finally did my Bernie Parent collection (probably my smallest) the other day (and there was still one card in the binder I couldn't find here!), and I started the Bobby Clarke collection. I still have several other hockey players (including Yzerman which spans six 3" binders of standard sized cards and a 4" or 5" binder of other-sized cards). All my baseball HOF players, the current stars, retired stars I'll collect whether they make the HOF or not (Murphy, Mattingly, Rose, a few others), and probably some other collections. Plus I still need to log in all the stuff I have available. Since I'm not actively seeking cards for most of these collections, it's not a huge priority. Plus, the whole thing is simply a hobby. I spend too much time with it as it is! :)
I had severalspreadsheets, but I finally combined all the tabs into one doc. It started as simply a year by year wantlist (mostly Phillies). It was fun deleting tabs. :) I have one tab that does tell me what is in each 5,000-count monster box of commons. Another tab has a list of ebay sellers I avoid. There are others in there too, which again, mean something to me, but no one else would have any use for them. Fun stuff!
