As someone who knows one of the photographers who took a large portion of the photos used in that set (and other Fleer sets), it wasn't the photographs - it was their printing process that year. He wasn't too happy they made his photos look so bad.

Tough call to pick one.
Baseball, I always liked the 78 Topps design, being simple with the players position in a baseball. But the first ever set I tried to complete was an 82 Fleer.
Football 84 Topps
Basketball 78 Topps
Hockey even though I don't have many of this set, I would say 79 Topps
Racing 94 Maxx Premier Plus.

I didn't participate first time, but mine is probably 1981 Topps baseball, a set that rarely gets any love.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Since I was not a member when this was a new topic it is nice to get to jump in now. Mine, far and away, is the 1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier hockey set. Plain, elegant design, manageable number of cards to allow a good chance at set building, great mix of stars and some really good rookie cards (Federov, Modano, Nolan, Jagr and Sundin, for example).

I love Football cards, but man i cant pass up on the first set i ever built......... The Red, White, and Blue 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball set. So iconic, the design awesome...... the photography, totally 80's. The Rookies, and stars, how do ya beat it. Great site, great topics, great info, great guys and gals!!!

As you may have guessed from my profile pic, my favourite set is the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey. Yes it's Gretzky's rookie year, as well as the last year for Hull and Howe, but it was probably the first complete set I ever put together as a kid. Also I may be partial to the blue cards, because the 2001-02 O-Pee-Chee (also blue) is one of my "modern" set favourites. Back in the day, my favourite set was the 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee. I just loved the design.

~Rob~ Hockey set collector including inserts, ERR, COR, VAR. Knowledgeable about 1968-69 to 1994-95 hockey. All 1990 and newer cards for trade are NRMT. Expect the same in return. 1989 and older are assigned a grade. Everything on my trade list is available for sale. Reasonable prices based on condition. If it's not on my tradelist, it's not available.

I couldn't possibly pick a favorite in baseball, football, or even basketball. But my favorite racing set is the 2009 Press Pass Eclipse set. Combining NASCAR and Astronomy made that brand my favorite early on, but the 08 and 09 sets really took the Astronomy theme seriously. The 08 cards had much darker borders than the 09's though. The 09 set was perfect: awesome design and layout on the cards, excellent layout for the set and the subsets were perfectly matched with the theme.
For those unfamiliar with NASCAR cards, here's the link to the set:

Since this thread was originally done, I did a countdown of my top 20 favorite NBA designs when I had my 20th anniversary of collecting the NBA in 2016. It's 1996-97 Ultra. I wrote out a very detailed post about why it is my favorite on Cardboard History, HERE. In the recap of my top 20 that I lead off with, there would be one change if I were to make it now- 1997-98 Ultra would rank much higher.
Since this post, I also got into hockey. It's early so far, but 1990-91 Pro Set is in the lead as my favorite set.
I don't actively collect baseball, but 1990 is my favorite Topps flagship set. The one that everybody hates.
My favorite non-sports set is 1954 Topps Scoop. I hadn't even known it existed when I made my first reply in this thread.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Billy, when i typed mine above, I considered adding a favorite basketball set, but I couldn't decide between 96-97 Ultra or 96-97 Finest. I think 1996-97 basketball is the best year of cards for any sport, and those were my two favorites of the lot.
