I bought a $5 jumbo pack of Score football on my lunch break today. My first 2019 football cards. Counting base, parallels, and inserts, I got at least one card from 12 different sets in my pack. I like this mostly, for variety's sake, though I could do without 5 or 6 parallel versions of most insert sets, which they did again this year. But I only got one parallel insert, so I digress. But now I can see why some set collectors don't like insert cards, because it seems like it would take a lot of packs to finish the base set, when only 26 of the 40 cards were base cards. I never understood why some collectors want more base and less inserts in a pack, when inserts are often nice-looking cards, but now it just hit me. I still think it's cool to get a bunch of cards that don't all look alike though.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Variety is the spice of life?
I can answer the on wanting more base cards. There are still a handful of set collectors left in this world. I'd personally hate purchasing a full box if I wasn't going to get a little close to a set in there. But building that way is also my favorite as there is nothing like ripping wax (or plastic) and finding out what's inside. Multiple parallels, especially for inserts, has become to endemic, but as long as collectors chase them.....

Right, and I have nothing against set collectors at all. I tried that route recently, but it just wasn't for me. I think this particular pack just stood out because the ratio of base-to-everything else seemed so low. A few recent, scattered comments about "I dont like inserts because it takes away from base cards" makes a little more sense now. The worst thing about my parallel insert was that I also got the regular version of the same insert card. In fact, there were 2 total repeated players in the pack. And no Buccaneers, my favorite team.

I've had that happen in Score packs also and not from this year. I think it was both the 08 and 13 years that I opened packs and likewise got a base and parallel of the same card. One was even a parallel of an insert. Shocking right?! Then again, it was an SN499 of a Brady card so I couldn't argue too much.

Some insert sets are nice, but when you have 23 different sets all in the same pack it gets a little out of hand. JMO

I love getting inserts w/ old HOF'rs, mostly be/c the base sets wouldn't have them and I could learn about that player. Now some sets have the older players as base cards or SP's. What drives me crazy is there are subsets to the subsets, ie different borders, colors, designs. I can't keep up!. But I still buy packs be/c I love opening packs, so fun and addictive.

If I had that in Topps baseball, I wouldn't like it. All those tribute and mothers day inserts are boring and look alike. I think Score makes nice looking inserts though. My duplicate guy in the insert + red insert was Jared Goff.

I started noticing subsets/inserts with '90 Score Football, and I like them. That's why a large part of my collecting is subsets and inserts.
Topps Heritage has some good inserts that I collect like the All-Stars, New Age, and recently started adding Scratch-Offs. Topps Baseball, I agree has dull inserts.
