Cards I got signed, with storyby vrooomed - 64 cards (Last updated on Dec 22, 2017) |
An additional autograph story: In 1990, during Spring Training, I asked Juan Samuel and Mike Scioscia to each sign a baseball for me. The balls had been used for batting practice and had actually been hit out of the park. My dad and I had picked up about 20-25 balls and we were giving them out to kids so they could use them for autographs too. Got to tell Juan Samuel how much we missed him being a Phillie. I got Scioscia's autograph because he's from near Philadelphia.
21. 1986 Donruss #619 Dave Stewart
First base side stands, Veteran's Stadium, Philadelphia, pre-game, 1986. At this point in his career, he wasn't an especially dominating pitcher, although he sure looked like he should be. Although his career ERA didn't move much from the end of 1985 to the time he retired, he sure became very successful the next year. Maybe it was because I wished him well that night in 1986. (Probably not.) He was very kind to all the people asking for his autograph, although admittedly, most people weren't seeking him out. I just thought it would be cool to have his signature on my cards. Actual card |
22. 1986 Fleer #453 Dave Stewart
First base side stands, Veteran's Stadium, Philadelphia, pre-game, 1986. See the 1986 Donruss Stewart. Actual card |
23. 1988 Fleer #307 Chris James
Card show, Rickshaw Inn, Route 70, Cherry Hill, NJ, 1988. Autographs were either $2 or $3 each, and so I splurged to get Chris and Shane Rawley's. I think I bought the cards at the show because these were the nicest looking of the 1988s (in my opinion). When there was no one left to get stuff signed by Chris, I went back over and was chatting with him. He was from a small town in Texas, very close to the hometown of my best friend from my Freshman year (87-88) of college. We were able to speak about his home area for a while. I remember going to this show with Swami Lee. Actual card |
24. 1988 Fleer #311 Shane Rawley
Card show, Rickshaw Inn, Route 70, Cherry Hill, NJ, 1988. At the same show as Chris James, Shane had a pretty steady line of people as he was an established major leaguer and Chris was still going up and down between AAA and the majors. I didn't get to the chance to chat much with Shane, just to thank him for the autograph and wish him well. I remember him being very cordial with everyone that day. Actual card |
25. 1988 ProCards #864 Alan LeBoeuf
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June or July, 1988. Pretty sure I was with the Swami yet again, as he had realized the ease in obtaining autographs and the ability to heckle opposing players at a minor league ball park. I wound up getting 10 autographs during this trip. Actual card |
26. 1988 ProCards #865 Steve Sharts
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June or July, 1988. See the Alan LeBoeuf card. Actual card |
27. 1988 ProCards #867 Tony Brown
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June or July, 1988. See the Alan LeBoeuf card. Actual card |
28. 1988 ProCards #869 Chuck Malone
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June or July, 1988. See the Alan LeBoeuf card. Actual card |
29. 1988 ProCards #871 Warren Magee
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June or July, 1988. See the Alan LeBoeuf card. Actual card |
30. 1988 ProCards #875 Chuck McElroy
Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June or July, 1988. See the Alan LeBoeuf card. Probably the most notable of the 10 that I got that day, seeing McElroy in person, we never in a million years thought that this scrawny little guy would make it to the majors. He stuck around for 13 seasons! Phillies wound up trading him to the Cubs with another pitcher to get Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams. Actual card |

Those are cool cards with awesome storys, I wish I had some autos
This inspires me to make a list of my signed cards, but will have to be delayed as I’m still adding cards to my collection.
Dan, you're the greatest! (Who am I to call Morena Corwin a liar?)
David - LOL! Glad to see you looked at my list. This is one that will continue to grow and get the actual cards uploaded. It's a small part of my collection, but the fact that I have stories behind each one is what makes it so special. I honestly get the autographs for the story behind it rather than for any monetary value (else I never would have asked 75% of the players/people I have). And, heck, Morena is right. :)
I went to high school (Lawrence, Kansas) with Steve Jeltz. I hope he became a nicer person as an adult. In high school he was a first class jerk.
Great stories, looking forward in checking out this list in the future.
AA Eastern League is where I get most of my autographs, only tried to get one Reading Phil though, and that was Preston Claiborne, see my Rejected! list to see how that turned out.
Your story of the Municipal Stadium, Reading, PA, June 29 or July 12, 1985. Me & my dad would go to the Albany-Colonie Yankees games. I'd buy three of the four seats in a box for $18. Nobody ever bought the fourth seat, so we'd have the whole box to ourselves.
Chuck, reason I know it's one of those 2 dates, I had actually saved my ticket stubs. These box seats were $3 each! And same, we almost always had a seat next to us empty. Hope everyone enjoys this as much as I do. I am having a blast (from the past) going through my cards. I didn't realize I had so many cards signed! (I still have more to go!)
I’m realizing the same thing as I’m sorting through them.
I'll have to check out Swami's shop sometime. I'm right in Mt. Laurel. Funny, I remember as a kid going to some auto dealership on 130 to see Larry Bowa and got a signed picture. |
