My Top 10 Favorite George Brett 1983-1985 Cards (That I Own)

by midbellman - 10 cards (Last updated on Dec 20, 2014)

10. 1985 7-Eleven Super Star Sports Coins: Great Lakes Region #II AC George Brett

Here is the token "non-card" card. I really like the Sportflics cards and I wonder if they stole the idea from 7-11. These coins were fun to collect, because there are several different regions that they were distributed to. So you have to collect all the regions or your collection just isn't complete.

9. 1985 Topps Rub-downs #NNO George Brett / Andre Dawson / Paul Molitor / Alan Wiggins

Not sure if this will also qualify as a "Non-card" card. At least it has the size and shape of a regular card. I have mixed emotions about cards like these. The purpose of these cards was to rub the image off on other surfaces, so it is kind of sad that it never got used for its purpose. The collector in me is happy that it didn't get used for its purpose so I can have it in my collection. I find it funny that Topps used the exact same players and design for 1984 and 1985.

8. 1984 Donruss Action All-Stars #55 George Brett

I believe that this is the first Donruss card in my all of my Top Ten lists. I guess bigger is better.

6. 1983 Topps Foldouts #3 Batting Leaders

I wonder if Topps had this going through their mind with the set.

"We want to highlight a bunch of stars, but we don't want to make a bunch of individual cards or give you any stats detailing why we are highlighting them. Hmm...Let’s do a 17 player double-sided foldout. Brilliant!"

I have the complete set of these cards and its fun to look at them every once and awhile. But let me tell you, it was a choir trying to get the whole panel scanned, fitted and submitted to tradingcarddb. Each player’s picture is 4"x6". The whole panel is 38"x6". My scanner is only 10"x13".

5. 1985 Baseball Greats Caricatures #10 George Brett

If you have read my other top ten lists’ you know that I like cartoon or caricature cards. It is something out of the ordinary. This is a set that is on my radar to collect.

4. 1984 Topps Nestle #500 George Brett

I like the 1984 Topps set as a whole. But which card to pick. The base, Tiffany, super, OPC, or Nestle. Since I grew up on Nestle Nesquik and it makes me nostalgic, I guess this card won.

3. 1984 Fun Foods Pins #6 George Brett

What??? Another "non-card" card. Really? You bet! I like anything that is different from the standard four corners, rectangular, cardstock that we all know and love.

2. 1983 Perma-Graphics All-Star Credit Cards #1 George Brett

I like the Perma-Graphic credit card style cards. This one makes me laugh. It looks like the cameraman snuck up on George; right after George woke up, and quickly took the picture before George realized what was happening. Surprise!

1. 1983 Kansas City Royals Police #NNO George Brett

One of my favorite team issued sets that I own. I hope to one day own the 1981 Police set as well. Someday I will probably do a Top Ten of Royals team issued sets, but for now this will conclude this Top Ten. Do you agree with my list? What are your favorite cards from this era? Please comment and don't feel that you have to limit yourself to George Brett cards. I would love to read comments from other collectors and respond.
