by C2Cigars - 16 cards (Last updated on Sep 27, 2021)

1. 1959 Topps #186 Mudcat Grant

James Timothy "Mudcat" Grant

RCOTD 24 Septemper 2008

2. 2004-05 In The Game Franchises US West #215 Mud Bruneteau

Modere Fernand "Mud" Bruneteau

He didn't want one of those long, two-syllable nicknames like "Mudcat".

3. 1969-70 Topps #1 Gump Worsley

Lorne John "Gump" Worsley

He was given his nickname because friends thought he looked like comic-strip character Andy Gump.

4. 1970 Topps #410 Boog Powell

John Wesley "Boog" Powell

5. 1959 Topps #431 Whammy Douglas

Charles William "Whammy" Douglas

Blind in one eye, he only played part of one Major League season in 1957, appearing in 11 games. Yet, never appearing in another MLB game he gets a card in 1959? He had much more success in the minors.

6. 1953 Topps #150 Harry Simpson

Harry Leon "Suitcase" Simpson

Poor Suitcase never got his nickname on the front of his cards.

His childhood nickname was “Goody”. Popular misconception is the nickname was associated with his numerous trades that caused him to constantly be packing his suitcase. But it was sportswriters who likened him to the Toonerville Trolley comicstrip character Suitcase Simpson.

7. 1976 Topps #109 Boobie Clark

Charles Lee "Boobie" Clark

Oh, the memories. Me and my Dad would act like a couple of kids every time they said his name during a game...Boobie! Boobie!

8. 1910 Old Mill Cigarettes T210 #NNO Guy Titman

Guy Love Titman

No joke. That's his full name. And it's so true.
We guys love 'em, man.

9. 1961 Nu-Cards Baseball Scoops #476 Dizzy Dean / Daffy Dean

Jay Hanna "Dizzy" Dean
aka Jerome Herman "Dizzy" Dean

Paul Dee "Daffy" Dean ("Daffy" was only used by the media)

The brothers were part of the Gashouse Gang. Which included teammates Charles Arthur "Dazzy" Vance and Joseph Michael "Ducky" Medwick.

10. 1933-34 World Wide Gum Ice Kings (V357) #10 "Happy" Day

Clarence Henry "Happy" Day

[singing]
Oh, happy day
Oh, happy day
When Jesus washed
When He washed
My sins away

Muscat Grant is one of my all-time favorite Twins! 21-7 in 1965, plus he was a great hitter. He homered in the 1965 World Series. Mudcat and Jim Kaat were frequently used as pinch hitters!

Not sure if he has any cards, but my favorite Hockey player name was Seppo Repo. I believe he played for Phoenix in the WHA.

And now I've discovered Harry "the Hat" Walker." I have not researched the origin of his nickname, but I love that it appears on the front of this card.
