10,000 People By Sport

by Billy Kingsley - 74 cards (Last updated on Jan. 21, 2017)

1. 2006-07 Ultra #63 Elton Brand

The NBA leads the way, naturally, as more than half my collection is made up of NBA cards. 2746 different people make up my NBA collection. Elton was chosen as he is my all-time favorite player.

2. 1990-91 Pro Set #455 Scott Bjugstad

Surprisingly, hockey already holds the #2 position with 1305 people, a number that has already gone up since I began making this list. Scott Bjugstad here is the actual 10,000th person to enter my collection.

3. 1990 Topps #31 Henry Cotto

Baseball is third, again, a surprise. In my life I've purchased a grand total of 2 baseball packs- every single other card has been given to me as gifts, as were most of the hockey cards I have- my collection went from 28 hockey cards to more than 2800 in one day for example. Baseball currently sits at 1286 people, although I am sure the number will go up soon as I have a nearly full 200 count box of 1990 Topps that was gifted to me by Mark Hoyle.

4. 1991 Racing Champions #4 Ernie Irvan

In a surprise to me, NASCAR ranks fourth with only 1180 different people in the collection. This card is the very first NASCAR card I ever got. NASCAR's numbers are held back by the fact that cards only began to be issued on a regular basis in 1988, the sport's 40th anniversary.

5. 1991 Ultra #120 Marion Butts

Football has 1093 different people in my collection.

6. 1911 Heroes of History/Men of History (T68) #57 Julius Caesar

OK, I know the list is titled BY SPORT but I also collect non-sports cards, and in fact I enjoy them greatly. This was my first tobacco card and when I got it the oldest card in my collection by 37 years, I've since gotten back to 1890. One of my passions is ancient Rome. There are exactly 750 non-sports people in my collection.

7. 2001 Fleer Greats of the Game - Feel The Game Classics #3 Lou Carnesecca

NCAA basketball comes next with 414 people. This is the only part of the list where the number could actually go down, as there are several people I have college cards of but are missing from my NBA collection- and a couple who played in the NBA very briefly but did not get any real cards.

8. 1991 Collegiate Collection Legends of Indy #25 Jules Goux

Indy car racing has 134 people in my collection. Over the past few years- since 2011, really- I've really begun to enjoy Indy car racing, but their season is too short for it to supplant NASCAR as my favorite form of racing. By the way, his last name was pronounced "Goo". It has now been more than a decade since Indy racing got a set, I believe.

9. 1998 Action #NNO8 John Force

I enjoy all forms of auto racing, but drag racing is over too fast to really hold my attention, with each race taking literally about 3 seconds. John Force is by far my favorite driver in this segment of the sport. I have cards of 120 people in the world of drag racing. Drag Racing last got a set in 2005.

10. 1991 Carms Formula 1 #1 Ayrton Senna

F1 is supposedly the most popular form of auto racing in the world- but they get very few cards, the last set being issued in, I believe, 2005 as well. I would collect all the other forms of racing, besides NASCAR, if they had cards. 85 F1 drivers appear in my collection.

Billy, I just noticed your sample card #58 for Lacrosse, Paula Heuser, is actually a field hockey card.
