Well, made my first big card lot purchase last week: 40,000 cards. I bought the cards as a Chistmas gift for myself and wanted a name for the purchase ... The Santa Lot? ... hmm think that name was already taken. Since I am basically doubling the size of my collection and should have over 100,000 cards when I finish cataloging, I have dubbed it 'The Hoarder Lot'. So much for my 2018 goal of selling some of my collection.
The details: According to the seller: about 80% of the cards are hockey and should have complete UD base sets from 2005 - 2015. If that's the case, money well spent ... with 35,000 cards to spare. Of course, with a card lot this size, I expect some early 90's puck junk / junk wax, hopefully not too much. I will post here occasionally on progress and update 'The Hoarder Lot' as I get through it.
Entire purchase: 9 - 5,000 card boxes; 3 - 3,000 card boxes; 1 - unopened box of '92 UD baseball; 1 - unopened box of '92 UD high series baseball

Did something similar in September. About a 100,000 card lot and still processing, sorting, and adding to the database. My wife has called me the card hoarder.

I've bought about 80-100K in 3-4 lots since the late summer. What keeps me doing it is that the price ends up being less than what I would spend for my own personal collection, and I both add to my own collection and to my trade list. AND, the logging of cards never ends! Congrats, and have fun with this!

No better way to spend those cold winter months than with boxes of new cards to sort

Always fun to go through a huge lot of cards - and when the price is right, how can you go wrong? Christmas does make a perfect excuse to justify it...at least to others, if that is necessary....

Spent about an hour or so going through the boxes separating hockey from the rest. Think the split is closer to 60/40 (hockey/other). Good thing is that there is a lot of UD base cards as seller promised. Unfortunately, I have about 2.5 boxes of 89-92 hockey and 1.5 boxes of the same for baseball. Oh well, I will still enjoy reviewing and cataloging.

Finally got through the first box of cards. I am starting with non-hockey. A total of 2,900 cards from 72 different sets. Over 80% of the cards are from the 90's. Other items of note: near complete set of 1990 Score Football and Series 1 Complete set of 1993-93 Upper Deck Basketball and I was able to sell 6 cards last week.

Box #2 was so much easier to get through. Cards (4,370) from fewer sets (18), mainly baseball and for the most part organized. Sets are still mainly from the 90's. A number of nealy completed sets: 1992 Fleear Ultra Basketball - Series 1 (197/200); 1991 Topps Baseball (513/792); 1990 Score Baseball (689/704); 1991 Score Baseball (850/893); 1991 Leaf Baseball - Series 2 (257/264); 1989 Topps Baseball (683/792). Unfortunately, where sets are close to complete, key rookies and stars are missing (Nolan Ryan, Bo Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Cal Ripken Jr., etc). This box also included the now infamous Mark Jackson Hoops Basketball card with the Menendez Brothers in court side seats for a Knicks game.

Did 92 Ultra have the Shaq rookie?

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

In case you missed the discussions, 1991 Topps MLB cards have 4 different backs. The Dark Logo on back cards are easy to separate from the regular cards. Both of those versions also have a glow-back version that's most easily spotted with a blacklight or other UV light and the glow-backs aren't listed on here yet.
