Most of these are 2015. I'm not surprised b/c Topps has gotten SO lazy! I really like #'s 21/22. That's a good comparison. I have the Ozzie card but the other one. There are lots of examples of Topps using the same Ozzie Smith photos a decade or more later. Nearly all of his cards from the last 15 years are "copies" of pictures on cards from the '80's and '90's. I'm sure I have over 50 examples of that. Stan Musial is another one that they re-use the same photo over and over.

I have the Ozzie card but NOT the other one.

That Gordon one gets me. I know there's a 2015 Topps and 2015 Topps Opening Day where they airbrushed a player from home to road uniform of the same team. I don't remember who though.

1989 Pro Set Football Bo Jackson #185 & 1990 Fleer Football Bo Jackson #256 are nearly the same photo.

Why are people so surprised by this? I mean, with a watered down market and Topps putting out 50 different sets a year for the same sport, do you really expect them to have 50 different pictures of the same player?! I mean, at least they zoom in/out or artistically change the photo for the card. In a competitive market they have to have some nitch to get people to spend their money on the cardboard whether it has the same picture or not. Personally I only collect the regular Topps sets. I guess I am a purist in that respect, but I only collect other cards of the players that I target/follow.
Personally I would like to see them change it up a bit...more action shot type cards like the old-school Topps Stadium Club sets, or showing pitchers batting if they are known as decent hitters (i.e. Mike Leake, Matt Harvey, etc.)
As for reusing pictures from 10 years ago...unless that player is still active, what do you expect them to do?! Go take a picture of them playing catch with their grandkids?
|
I certainly do expect them to have 50 different photos of an active player if they are putting out 50 different cards of them.

The 2015 Allen & Ginter set just exploded this list, it was only 3 pages before that set came out and then we see the end result.
And if Topps can afford to buy the exclusive rights for MLB properties and put out so much product, I don't think it would hurt them to snap a couple extra shots of the guy and his bat and/or ball.
Thanks to the guys who added cards, I'll look them up and add them when more get stockpiled.

I'm guessing you're wanting to stick to baseball, but if anyone wants to see how bad Topps could be, look at Bubba Smith's Topps football cards. Only 8 cards during his playing days and 5 of them had the same picture with only zooming or airbrushing differences.
|
'69 Topps had a lot of the same pics as the '68 Topps. Same with the '54 Topps and the '55 Topps. '69 was pretty bad, as a lot of the duplicate photos were hall of fame players. The Tom Seaver, Rod Carew, and Ernie Banks come to mind. I have no reason to ever collect those because of that.

I've found multiple cards of Fredbird with the same picture...
|
The back of 1991 Ultra #291 Herman Moore and the front of 1991 Upper Deck #17 Herman Moore.
|
1969 Topps #38 Zoilo Versalles and 1970 Topps #365 Zoilo Versalles are the same photo also
|
I find it interesting that most are from the retro sets. Just proof that Topps can be a one-company Junk Era

Thanks to everybody who posted cards in the comments, they have been added. I'm closing this list down in order to start another one, 10 pages seems like a good round number. I know 2015 A&G clones exploded the list. Hopefully there is a good variety in the second list.
Also besides the list adding cards from the comments, the list was also ordered by date, based on the first card. Except for the Clemens header and the Jose Lind card, cause it looks funnier that way.

The Bubba Smith cards are great! Nice job putting this together and thank you!
|
1993 Topps Gary Gaetti and Junior Ortiz.
|
Jorge Soler - 2013 Topps Pro Debut Baseball, and 2013 Bowman Top Prospect....did they seriously Photoshop an entire uniform on him?
|
Ive got Aaron Hill topps 2010 and 2011. Exactly the same, but a different year.
|
I guess if we wouldn't take the bait they'd stop it. I'm just as guilty as the next person as an accessory to perpetuating the practice if I go buy said product. But, should it be an expectation to have different photos for different cards? Definitely yes in different years.
|
I think you need to add Mike Piazza 1993 Topps Traded 24T and 1994 Topps flagship #1. I didn't notice it until just recently. They were both selected for the 2016 Topps Berger's Best subset.
